This document specifies requirements for iron and steel slag abrasives, as supplied for blast-cleaning processes. It specifies ranges of particle sizes and values for apparent density, Mohs hardness, moisture content, conductivity of aqueous extract and water-soluble chlorides. The requirements specified in this document apply to abrasives supplied in the "new" condition only. They do not apply to abrasives either during or after use. Test methods for non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives are given in the various parts of ISO 11127. NOTE Although this document has been developed specifically to meet requirements for preparation of steelwork, the properties specified will generally be appropriate for use when preparing other material surfaces, or components, using blast-cleaning techniques. These techniques are described in ISO 8504‑2.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11126-6:2018 specifies detailed requirements for iron and steel slag abrasives used in blast-cleaning processes prior to the painting and coating of steel substrates. This standard focuses on the quality and characteristics of non-metallic abrasives in their "new" condition, ensuring optimal preparation of steel surfaces for enhanced coating performance. It provides essential parameters such as particle size distribution, density, hardness, moisture content, electrical conductivity of aqueous extracts, and water-soluble chloride levels, critical for blast-cleaning effectiveness and corrosion prevention.
Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this second edition updates and expands the scope to include steel slags alongside iron slags, reinforcing its role as a key guideline for surface preparation in industrial applications.
Key Topics
-
Particle Size and Shape: Defines ranges and distribution of particle sizes for slag abrasives, categorized as grit or shot, with clearly designated sizing conventions to match project requirements.
-
Physical Properties: Specifies apparent density (2.6 to 3.9 kg/dm³) and Mohs hardness minimum of 6, ensuring durability and effectiveness during blasting.
-
Chemical and Moisture Limits: Limits moisture content to a maximum of 0.2% and water-soluble chloride content to 0.002%, minimizing the risk of surface contamination and corrosion post-cleaning.
-
Conductivity of Aqueous Extracts: Stipulates a maximum of 250 μS/cm to control soluble contaminants which can affect coating adhesion.
-
Identification & Marking: Requires abrasives to be clearly labeled according to ISO 11126 conventions, facilitating traceability and quality control.
-
Sampling and Testing Methods: Refers to ISO 11127 parts 1 to 7 for standardized sampling and testing procedures, ensuring consistent abrasive evaluation.
Applications
ISO 11126-6:2018 is primarily intended for the preparation of steel substrates before painting, blasting iron and steel slag abrasives to achieve:
-
Surface Cleaning for Coating Preparation
Effective removal of rust, mill scale, and old coatings to provide a clean, profile-ready surface for new paint or protective layers. -
Industrial Steel Fabrication
Ensuring optimal surface texture and cleanliness in heavy engineering, shipbuilding, and structural steelwork. -
Corrosion Protection
By limiting water-soluble chlorides and contaminants, the standard helps prevent premature coating failures and enhances durability. -
Multi-Material Surface Preparation
While tailored for steel, the physical properties specified extend applicability to other material surfaces where blast-cleaning is appropriate, such as certain alloys or castings. -
Quality Assurance in Abrasives Supply Chain
Labelling and test reporting enable manufacturers, suppliers, and end-users to verify compliance and performance of abrasives.
Related Standards
