This document specifies a field method for the determination of water-soluble chlorides in non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives. This field method is provided as a kit with all components and premeasured extraction solution. This document differs from ISO 11127-7 in that equal volumes of the sample of abrasive and extraction solution are used for the determination of chloride level in the abrasive. In comparison, ISO 11127-7 uses a weight to volume ratio of abrasive to solvent (deionized water) to extract soluble salts from the abrasive. It is intended for use in the field as compared to ISO 11127-7, which is well suited for use in the laboratory.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11127-8:2020 specifies a field test method for determining water-soluble chlorides in non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives, crucial for steel substrate preparation before paint and coating application. This international standard facilitates quick, onsite chloride level assessment to prevent corrosion and premature coating failure caused by chloride contaminants transferred during abrasive blasting.
Distinct from ISO 11127-7, this field method uses equal volume ratios of abrasive sample and acidic extraction solution in a portable test kit, enabling convenient testing outside of laboratory environments. The kit includes all necessary reagents and apparatus, allowing users to efficiently measure chloride contamination levels and ensure compliance with substrate preparation quality requirements.
Key Topics
- Water-soluble chlorides detection: Important for identifying chloride ions that can cause corrosion and coating degradation on steel substrates.
- Field kit testing: Portable and ready-to-use kits with premeasured acidic extraction solution (pH 3.6 ± 0.2) derived from biodegradable carboxylic acids such as glycolic, acetic, or citric acid.
- Sampling and procedure: Uses equal volumes of abrasive and solvent, shaken and allowed to settle before chloride ion extraction and detection by ion-specific detection tubes.
- Apparatus: Includes containers for sampling and testing, glass chloride ion detection tubes (per ISO 8502-5), and snapper tools for tube preparation.
- Safety and accuracy: Method includes clear instructions to avoid contamination of detection tubes and guidelines for result confirmation via laboratory testing (ISO 11127-7) if needed.
- Test reporting: Standardized report format detailing test parameters, results, deviations, and test personnel for traceability.
Applications
ISO 11127-8:2020 is essential for industries involved in:
- Surface preparation for painting and coatings on steel structures.
- Onsite quality control during abrasive blasting operations.
- Corrosion prevention in marine, automotive, construction, and heavy engineering sectors where steel substrates are used.
- Verification of non-metallic abrasive cleanliness to meet standards outlined in the ISO 11126 series.
- Minimizing coating failure risks related to chloride contamination transferred from abrasives.
By employing this field method, operators can make immediate decisions on abrasives' suitability, reducing costly rework and ensuring long-term coating performance.
Related Standards
- ISO 11126 series: Specifications for various types of non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives (e.g., copper refinery slag, coal furnace slag, garnet).
- ISO 11127 series: Related test methods for non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives, including:
- Part 1: Sampling methods.
- Part 6: Determination of water-soluble contaminants by conductivity.
- Part 7: Laboratory determination of water-soluble chlorides (weight-to-volume extraction).
- ISO 8502-5: Ion detection tube method for measuring chlorides on prepared steel surfaces, referenced for chloride detection in this field method.
By integrating ISO 11127-8:2020 with its complementary standards, industries can establish a comprehensive quality assurance framework for steel substrate preparation - enhancing coating durability and infrastructure lifespan through effective chloride contaminant control.
