This document specifies requirements and provides recommendations for repetitive work tasks involving repetitive movements and exertions of the upper extremity. It provides guidance on the identification and assessment of risk factors commonly associated with repetitive movements and exertions of the upper limbs, thereby allowing evaluation of the related health risks to the working population. The recommendations apply to the adult working population and are intended to give reasonable protection for nearly all healthy adults. This document does not address the manual handling of objects while using lift-assistive devices such as exoskeletons and does not address the needs of pregnant women or persons with disabilities.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11228-3:2026 specifies ergonomic requirements and recommendations for manual handling tasks that involve repetitive movements and exertions of the upper limbs. Developed by ISO, this international standard provides a structured approach for the identification and assessment of risk factors commonly associated with work that can lead to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) in the upper limbs. ISO 11228-3 is designed for the adult working population, aiming to improve occupational health and safety for nearly all healthy adults by enabling organizations to evaluate and reduce health risks connected to repetitive tasks.
Importantly, this standard does not address manual handling assisted by lift-assistive devices, such as exoskeletons, nor does it cover the needs of pregnant women or persons with disabilities.
Key Topics
Ergonomics in Manual Handling:
- Focuses on repetitive movements and forceful exertions of the upper limbs, such as those found in manufacturing, assembly, and similar work environments.
- Highlights risk factors including:
- Frequency and duration of actions
- Working postures and movement patterns
- Required force or physical exertion
- Lack of sufficient recovery or rest breaks
- Object design and environmental conditions
Risk Identification and Assessment:
- Advocates for avoiding repetitive manual tasks where feasible through redesign, mechanization, or automation.
- Outlines a multi-level risk assessment process, starting with a quick assessment that categorizes tasks as acceptable, critical, or requiring further evaluation.
- Provides a framework for detailed risk evaluation using validated assessment tools.
- Recommends regular monitoring and reevaluation, especially when job roles or processes are redesigned.
Risk Reduction:
- Encourages interventions such as task redesign, workspace modifications, and enhanced work organization (e.g., job rotation or enlargement).
- Stresses the importance of participative ergonomics-actively involving employees in identifying problems and solutions.
Applications
Occupational Health and Safety Compliance:
- ISO 11228-3:2026 assists organizations in meeting workplace safety regulations by providing a recognized approach to risk assessment and control for repetitive manual tasks.
Workplace Design and Process Improvement:
- Useful for ergonomists, safety managers, human factors engineers, and occupational health professionals in industries like manufacturing, warehousing, food processing, and logistics.
- Supports the implementation of ergonomic best practices in designing jobs, selecting tools and equipment, and organizing work processes to minimize biomechanical risks.
Proactive Risk Management:
- Enables early identification of potentially harmful tasks, facilitating timely interventions to reduce the risk of upper limb musculoskeletal disorders.
- Offers a basis for training and raising awareness among workers and supervisors about ergonomics and safe manual handling practices.
Related Standards
To ensure a comprehensive approach to ergonomic risk management, consider these related standards:
- ISO 6385: Ergonomics principles in the design of work systems
- ISO 11228-1: Manual handling - Lifting, lowering, and carrying
- ISO 11228-2: Manual handling - Pushing and pulling
- ISO 11226: Ergonomics - Evaluation of static working postures
- EN 614-2: Ergonomic design principles for the safety of machinery - Interactions between machinery and work tasks
- EN ISO 12100: Safety of machinery – General principles for design – Risk assessment and risk reduction
- EN ISO 14738: Anthropometric requirements for the design of workstations at machinery
By integrating ISO 11228-3:2026 with these standards, businesses can create safer and more productive work environments, reducing the incidence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders and improving overall worker well-being.
