Describes methods for the determination of pore water pressure (point measurements) in unsaturated and saturated soil using tensiometers. Applicable for in situ measurements in the field and, e. g. soil cores, used in experimental examinations.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 11276:1995 (Soil quality - Tensiometer method)
ISO 11276:1995 specifies standardized methods for determining pore water pressure in unsaturated and saturated soils using tensiometers. It covers in situ field measurements as well as laboratory and experimental applications (e.g., soil cores, plant containers, lysimeters). The standard describes equipment, installation, preparation, reading, servicing and reporting practices needed to obtain reliable point measurements of soil pore water pressure (also called tensiometric pressure).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and limitations
- Applicable to both unsaturated and saturated soils for point measurements.
- Typical operational range at normal atmospheric pressure is down to about −85 kPa; performance is reduced at lower atmospheric pressures.
- Tensiometers do not function where sub-zero temperatures occur at the measurement depth; readings are affected by soil and air temperature fluctuations.
- Apparatus
- Main components: porous cup, connecting/body tubes, pressure sensor (mercury manometer, Bourdon gauge, electrical pressure transducer) and air-removal mechanisms.
- Porous cups are typically rigid, water-saturated (commonly unglazed ceramic); material guidance is provided in annexes.
- Installation & operation
- Install vertically or horizontally with the porous cup centered at target depth; minimize soil disturbance and maximize cup–soil contact.
- Use de-aired water when filling tensiometers and prevent air entrapment; systems must be leak-tight.
- Allow sufficient equilibration time before reading (recommend at least 4 h, preferably overnight ~16 h depending on soil moisture and texture).
- Calibration & maintenance
- Verify accuracy of Bourdon gauges and pressure transducers before installation and at least annually.
- Regular servicing is required; air accumulation is the primary operational issue and must be purged frequently (weekly inspections recommended).
- Results & reporting
- Readings must be corrected for the vertical head difference between pressure sensor and porous cup.
- Test reports should include site/soil description, tensiometer details, installation depth, measurement times and any observations affecting interpretation.
Applications and users
ISO 11276 is used by:
- Geotechnical and civil engineers monitoring soil water pressure for design and stability assessments
- Soil scientists and hydrologists studying vadose-zone processes and unsaturated hydraulic behavior
- Agronomists and horticultural researchers evaluating plant-available water in containers and root zones
- Environmental consultants and laboratory researchers conducting controlled soil core experiments and lysimeter studies
Practical uses include field pore water monitoring, laboratory experiments on soil moisture dynamics, irrigation scheduling research, and instrument standardization across studies.
Related standards
- ISO 11276 complements other ISO soil quality methods for moisture content, hydraulic properties and physical testing. Users should consult the broader ISO soil quality series for additional sampling and measurement protocols.
