This document establishes the steps of the overall process of pipeline rehabilitation, comprising: strategic and tactical activities: investigation and condition assessment of the existing pipeline; pipeline rehabilitation planning; operational activities: project specification; applications of techniques; documentation of the design and application process. This document defines general terms of pipeline rehabilitation and establishes the classification of families of renovation and trenchless replacement techniques, with description of their respective features. This document is applicable to underground drains and sewers and underground water and gas supply networks. This document does not apply to: new construction provided as network extensions; calculation methods to determine, for each viable technique, the characteristics of lining or replacement pipe material needed to secure the desired performance of the rehabilitated pipeline; techniques providing non-structural pipe liners; techniques for repair.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11295:2026 provides a comprehensive framework for the rehabilitation of underground plastics piping systems. Issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this standard delivers a clear classification and process overview for restoring or upgrading the performance of existing pipelines. ISO 11295:2026 outlines strategic, tactical, and operational activities involved in pipeline rehabilitation, focusing on drains, sewers, and underground water and gas supply networks. By establishing general terminology and classifying renovation and trenchless replacement techniques, the standard supports utility owners, engineers, and contractors in selecting appropriate solutions for infrastructure renewal.
Key Topics
- Pipeline Rehabilitation Process: Defines each step, from investigation and assessment to project specification, application, acceptance, and documentation.
- Investigation and Condition Assessment: Emphasizes the need for thorough analysis, including health, safety, environmental, and operational criteria.
- Performance Criteria: Specifies hydraulic, structural, environmental, and operational requirements to maintain continued pipeline functionality.
- Classification of Techniques: Details families of renovation methods (e.g., lining with pipes, hoses, or sprayed materials) and trenchless replacement (e.g., pipe bursting, horizontal directional drilling).
- Terms and Definitions: Standardizes industry terminology, enabling effective communication among stakeholders.
- Selection of Rehabilitation Methods: Guides users in choosing the most suitable technique based on system layout, performance requirements, environmental impact, and construction constraints.
- Project Documentation: Stresses the importance of comprehensive documentation for design, installation, quality assurance, and future reference.
Applications
The practical value of ISO 11295:2026 is evident across a wide range of rehabilitation projects for underground infrastructure:
- Municipal Utilities: Water, wastewater, and gas network operators benefit from structured asset management, streamlined decision-making, and consistent documentation practices.
- Civil Engineering: Consulting engineers and contractors use the standard to select and design optimal rehabilitation techniques matching project-specific performance needs.
- Pipeline Owners and Asset Managers: Enables proactive maintenance, risk assessment, and life extension of existing pipeline assets, supporting cost-effective and sustainable operations.
- Regulatory Compliance: Assists organizations in meeting local, national, and international requirements for environmental protection, public health, and safety.
Typical scenarios include restoring capacity and integrity to aging sewers, minimizing service disruptions with trenchless technologies, and planning water distribution upgrades to comply with modern performance indicators.
