This International Standard specifies a unipolar connector assembly, DF-1, intended for use in connecting implantable defibrillator leads to implantable defibrillator generators that do not produce more than 1 kV/50 A peak output. Essential dimensions and performance requirements related to connector fit are specified, along with test methods. This International Standard does not specify other connector features such as fastening means and material. This International Standard is applicable to the form and fit of the connector assembly, and does not address all aspects of functional compatibility, system performance, or reliability of different implantable defibrillator leads and implantable defibrillator generator assemblies.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11318:2002 - Cardiac defibrillators - Connector assembly DF‑1 for implantable defibrillators - Dimensions and test requirements specifies the DF‑1 unipolar connector assembly used to connect implantable defibrillator leads to implantable defibrillator generators (for generators that do not produce more than 1 kV / 50 A peak output). The standard defines essential form‑and‑fit dimensions, sealing and marking requirements, and type test methods to verify connector fit, electrical isolation and current‑carrying capability. It does not prescribe materials, fastening details or overall system performance.
Key topics and requirements
- Connector geometry and zones: precise dimensional limits for the lead connector and connector cavity (seal zone, sealing‑mechanism zone, grip zone, pin contact zone) to ensure interchangeability.
- GO gauges: lead connector and connector cavity GO gauges and associated insertion/withdrawal force limits (lead connector ≤ 14 N; connector cavity ≤ 9 N) to verify mechanical fit.
- Sealing and electrical isolation: requirement for at least one seal on the lead connector; electrical isolation verification using a high‑voltage pulse test (Annex A).
- Electrical tests:
- Lead connector electrical isolation test (Annex A): pulse waveform, 1.5 kV peak test pulses, immersion in saline, 500±50 cycles, and leakage limits (e.g., ≤100 mA early pulse, ≤20 mA later in pulse).
- Connector cavity current‑carrying test (Annex B): verifies the connector contact can carry specified currents using a defined test pin and high‑current pulse arrangement.
- Mechanical robustness: assessment of deformation from set‑screw fastening (ISO 7436 referenced) and axial forces; marking requirement (“DF‑1” symbol).
- Type (qualification) tests: tests in the standard are intended for qualification rather than routine production; equivalent methods may be used but the ISO methods are authoritative in disputes.
Applications and users
Who uses ISO 11318:2002:
- Manufacturers of implantable defibrillator leads and defibrillator generators (design and production).
- Medical device design engineers and connector specialists ensuring mechanical and electrical interchangeability.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies performing type‑qualification testing.
- Regulatory and quality teams drafting device specifications, technical files and supplier contracts. Practical applications include connector design validation, supplier acceptance testing, compatibility checks during device integration, and documentation for regulatory submission.
