ISO 11354-2:2015 specifies: - levels to represent the capability of an enterprise to interoperate with other enterprises; - measures for assessing the capability of a specific enterprise to interoperate with other enterprises; - methods for combining these measures into two kinds of overall assessment: - maturity level by concern and barrier, and - assessment relative to four designated maturity levels; - a method for representing concern and barrier overall assessments in a graphical form and for identifying where capabilities are required to achieve desired higher levels of interoperability.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11354-2:2015 defines a maturity model for assessing enterprise interoperability in manufacturing and related industries. Building on the ISO 11354 Framework for Enterprise Interoperability (Part 1), this part specifies how to measure an organisation’s capability to interoperate with other enterprises, how to combine those measures into overall maturity assessments, and how to visualise capability gaps. The standard uses a numeric maturity scale (levels 0–4: Unprepared, Defined, Aligned, Organized, Adaptive) to characterise interoperability maturity for specific concerns and barriers.
Key Topics
- Interoperability concerns: the model evaluates four areas - business, process, service, and data - to reflect stakeholder interests.
- Interoperability barriers: assessments cover three barrier categories - conceptual, technological, and organizational - that impede information exchange and collaboration.
- Maturity levels and measures: defines measures and practice classifications to map enterprise capabilities to maturity levels (0–4), with guidance for intermediate values.
- Aggregation methods: two aggregation approaches are provided for producing overall assessments:
- maturity level by concern and barrier, and
- assessment relative to designated maturity levels.
- Graphical representation: a method to visualise concern/barrier assessments, showing “as‑is” capability and identifying where capabilities must be improved to reach target “to‑be” interoperability levels.
- Alignment with interoperability approaches: the model relates results to interoperability approaches (integrated, unified, federated) for practical solution selection.
Applications
ISO 11354-2 is practical for organisations and professionals who need to plan, evaluate or improve interoperability between enterprise systems:
- Enterprise architects and IT managers assessing readiness for B2B collaboration or supply‑chain integration.
- Systems integrators and solution providers designing ICT-enabled interoperability solutions.
- Manufacturing engineers and operations leads aligning process and data flows with external partners.
- Consultants performing interoperability maturity assessments for large enterprises or SMEs. Practical uses include gap analysis, prioritising investments in standards, middleware, data models, or organizational change, and benchmarking interoperability capabilities across partners or divisions.
