ISO 11464:2006 specifies the pretreatments required for soil samples that are to be subjected to physico-chemical analyses of stable and non-volatile parameters and describes the following five types of pretreatment of samples: drying, crushing, sieving, dividing and milling. The pretreatment procedures described in ISO 11464:2006 are not applicable if they affect the results of the determinations to be made. ISO 11464:2006 is also not applicable to samples when volatile compounds are measured. In general, International Standards for analytical methods will state when it is necessary to adopt other procedures.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11464:2006 - "Soil quality - Pretreatment of samples for physico-chemical analysis" specifies standardized procedures for preparing soil samples prior to analysis of stable, non‑volatile physico‑chemical parameters. The standard defines five core pretreatment operations - drying, crushing, sieving, dividing (subsampling) and milling - and gives practical requirements for apparatus, handling and safety. It excludes procedures that would alter target analytes or any situation where volatile compounds are being measured.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Pretreatment steps: systematic sequence of drying, removal of extraneous matter, crushing to break aggregates, sieving to preferred aperture (commonly 2 mm), representative subsampling (quartering, riffle/sample dividers, mechanical subsampling) and milling for small test portions.
- Drying guidance: use a ventilated drying oven (temperature not exceeding 40 °C) or air/ freeze‑drying (freeze‑drying per ISO 16720). Keep sample layer thickness limited (e.g. up to 5 cm in an oven) and avoid direct sunlight.
- Apparatus: thermostatic drying oven with forced ventilation, freeze‑drier, crushers/mills/mortar, plate and mesh sieves compliant with ISO 565, mechanical mixers, sample dividers (riffle boxes) and analytical balances.
- Homogenization and subsampling: re‑homogenize after each size‑reduction or separation step; use quartering or a sample divider for representative laboratory/test portions; mill further when very small subsamples are required.
- Limitations and quality control: procedures must not change the analyte concentration or nature. The standard is not applicable when pretreatment would affect results or when analyzing volatiles. Maintain contamination control and consider special handling for contaminated or hazardous soils.
- Safety: follow precautions for potentially hazardous samples (contaminants, pathogens, spores); provide ventilation and avoid skin contact.
Applications and users
ISO 11464 is used by:
- Environmental and geotechnical laboratories preparing soils for chemical analyses (heavy metals, nutrients, pH, organic carbon where non‑volatile fractions are targeted)
- Contract laboratories and consultants performing contaminated‑land assessment
- Research institutions studying soil physico‑chemical properties
- Regulatory bodies specifying standard sample preparation for comparability of results
Practical benefits include improved reproducibility, reduced contamination risk, clearer traceability of sample handling and better comparability between laboratories.
