ISO 11483: 2005 describes three simple and fast procedures to prepare plutonium sources and a procedure to measure the activity ratio of 238Pu to (239Pu + 240Pu) by alpha spectrometry. The alpha spectrometry method is used for the determination of isotopic abundance of 238Pu in combination with mass spectrometry and eliminates the possible interferences of 238U in the latter method. It applies to the analysis of purified solutions of plutonium in 2 mol/l to 4 mol/l nitric acid containing 50 micrograms to 200 micrograms of plutonium per millilitre, as may result from the chemical treatment and purification preceding plutonium isotopic analysis by mass spectrometry.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11483:2005 - "Nuclear fuel technology - Preparation of plutonium sources and determination of 238Pu/239Pu isotope ratio by alpha spectrometry" - specifies fast, reproducible procedures for preparing plutonium alpha sources and for measuring the 238Pu/(239Pu + 240Pu) activity ratio by alpha spectrometry. The method is intended to complement mass spectrometry for plutonium isotopic analysis and helps eliminate potential 238U interferences in mass-based measurements. It applies to purified plutonium solutions in 2–4 mol·L−1 nitric acid with 50–200 µg Pu·mL−1, and to materials free from americium or containing <10% non‑volatile impurities.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Source preparation methods
- Drop deposition on electrochemically polished stainless‑steel discs (with tetraethylene glycol wetting, drying and ignition).
- Drop deposition on glazed porcelain discs (controlled drying and ignition in a muffle furnace).
- Electrodeposition onto stainless steel from buffered, slightly acidic solutions (electroplating cell, rotating anode stirrer).
- Alpha spectrometry measurement
- Use of semiconductor detectors to record Pu alpha spectra.
- Spectra processing to derive the activity ratio 238Pu / (239Pu + 240Pu).
- Peak tailing correction
- Methods included: Geometric-Progression Decrease and exponential extrapolation to correct peak tailing effects.
- Applicability constraints
- Quality considerations
- Sections covering resolution, repeatability, reproducibility, interference (including americium) and uncertainty evaluation (combined standard uncertainty).
Applications and who uses it
ISO 11483:2005 is used by organizations involved in:
- Nuclear fuel technology and fuel-cycle laboratories for plutonium accountancy and QC.
- Radiochemistry and analytical laboratories performing isotopic analysis of nuclear materials.
- Safeguards, nuclear forensics and regulatory bodies requiring validated methods to cross‑check mass‑spectrometry results and to remove 238U interference.
- Research groups studying alpha spectra and source‑preparation effects on spectral resolution.
Practical benefits include standardized, repeatable source preparation (drop deposition or electrodeposition), improved alpha‑spectrometric isotope ratio accuracy, and compatibility with downstream mass‑spectrometric isotopic analyses.
