ISO 11553-1:2005 describes hazards generated by laser processing machines, and specifies the safety requirements relating to radiation hazards and hazards generated by materials and substances. It also specifies the information to be supplied by the manufacturers of such equipment. Requirements dealing with noise as a hazard from laser processing machines are not included in ISO 11553-1:2005. They will be included in a subsequent amendment. ISO 11553-1:2005 is not applicable to laser products, or equipment containing such products, which are manufactured solely and expressly for the following applications: photolithography, stereolithography, holography, medical applications and data storage.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11553-1:2005 - Safety of machinery: Laser processing machines - Part 1: General safety requirements defines safety measures for machines that use lasers to melt, evaporate or otherwise change a workpiece. Prepared by ISO in collaboration with IEC, the standard focuses on radiation hazards and hazards arising from laser–material interactions (fumes, particles, fire/explosion risks), specifies required manufacturer information, and sets out verification and labeling expectations. It does not cover noise hazards and excludes laser products made solely for photolithography, stereolithography, holography, medical devices (IEC 60601-2-22), or data storage.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and exclusions: Applies to ready‑to‑use laser processing machines; lists specific excluded applications.
- Hazard identification: Requires manufacturers to identify radiation hazards and material/substance hazards generated during processing.
- Risk assessment: Mandatory documented risk assessments for all machine life phases and after modifications.
- Radiation protection:
- Control of exposure relative to Accessible Emission Limit (AEL) and Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) depending on access control (unrestricted, restricted, controlled).
- Engineering, administrative and PPE controls when exposure cannot be prevented.
- Safety measures and verification: Design‑level protections, safety-related control system principles, interlocks, guarding, and verification/testing of safety measures before delivery.
- Information and labeling: Manufacturer must supply user documentation, service instructions, maintenance guidance and appropriate safety labels.
- Service & maintenance rules: Defines preventive maintenance and service roles and responsibilities; importer/modifier responsibilities are addressed.
- Environmental & interference considerations: Recognizes effect of power conditions, temperature, humidity, EMI and other external factors on machine safety.
Practical applications
ISO 11553-1 is used to:
- Guide OEMs and system integrators in safe design and manufacture of laser cutting, welding, drilling and surface‑treatment machines.
- Inform machine buyers, safety engineers and compliance officers responsible for risk assessments, installation and safe operation.
- Support procurement specifications, CE conformity (Machinery Directive), and factory safety documentation.
Who should use this standard
- Manufacturers and importers of laser processing machines
- Machine designers, safety engineers and integrators
- Maintenance/service personnel and safety compliance officers
- Regulatory and certification bodies assessing machine safety
