ISO 11555-1:2002 specifies requirements for integrated stabilizers for central-axle (single-axle or tandem-axle) trailers up to a maximum laden mass of 3 500 kg. Integrated stabilizers conforming with its requirements are able to be used together with ISO 3853-compliant towing devices without restriction.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11555-1:2003 specifies requirements for integrated stabilizers fitted between towing vehicles and central‑axle caravans or light trailers (single‑ or tandem‑axle) up to a maximum laden mass of 3 500 kg. The standard ensures stabilizing devices are compatible with ISO 3853‑compliant towing devices and do not adversely affect coupling, braking or towbar strength and operation. It covers design, bench testing, fitting instructions and mandatory marking.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Integrated stabilizers for centre‑axle trailers up to 3 500 kg; blade stabilizers are addressed in a separate part.
- Uniform action: Stabilizer damping must be approximately uniform and continuous on both sides; friction‑based devices must keep max/min damping within ±30% across ±5° articulation.
- Angular range: Minimum displacement in attached state: ±60° articulation, ±7° pitch, ±8° roll. The stabilizer itself must allow ±75° articulation without pitch/roll.
- Damping and moment limits:
- Articulation damping moment limit: not to exceed 350 N·m or 0.46 × m (whichever is smaller), and not less than 0.07 × m (m = trailer maximum mass per ISO 3853).
- Resultant moment (vertical force + pitch): ≤ 300 N·m or 0.4 × m (whichever smaller).
- Roll moment: ≤ 300 N·m or 0.4 × m (whichever smaller).
- Attachment & usability:
- Coupling/uncoupling must be possible by hand (no tools) at specified angles.
- Attachment only by bolts; no drilling or welding; coupling head fitment must be unaffected.
- Must not impair trailer braking or cause excessive wear on towing elements.
- Test bench requirements:
- Simulated oscillation frequencies: 0.6 ± 0.2 Hz. Amplitudes: ±5° (articulation/pitch), ±3° (roll).
- Wear limits: damping moment reduction must not exceed 15% during specified cycle counts (measured at defined intervals: e.g., articulation after 250 and 50 000 cycles; pitch after 1 000 and 25 000; roll after 1 000 and 10 000).
- Instructions & marking: Manufacturers must supply fitting, use and maintenance instructions and permanently mark devices with “ISO 11555‑1”, device designation, maker, type and permitted application (e.g., min/max trailer mass).
Applications and users
ISO 11555‑1 is essential for:
- Stabilizer and coupling manufacturers (design, validation and certification)
- Trailer and caravan OEMs and aftermarket accessory suppliers
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors performing bench testing
- Regulators and safety engineers specifying safe towing components
- Fleet operators and installers benefit from standardized performance, compatibility and clear fitting/maintenance guidance.
