This document specifies laboratory exposure procedures for determining the effects of cyclic movement and artificial weathering on cured, elastic weatherproofing joint sealants (one- or multi-component).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11617:2022 - "Building and civil engineering sealants - Determination of changes in cohesion and appearance of elastic weatherproofing sealants after exposure of statically cured specimens to artificial weathering and mechanical cycling" - specifies laboratory exposure procedures to assess how elastic weatherproofing joint sealants (one- or multi-component) change in cohesion and appearance when subjected to combined artificial weathering and cyclic movement. The standard defines specimen preparation, conditioning, exposure cycles, inspection and reporting methods used to reproduce service-like degradation in a controlled laboratory environment.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Principle: Statically cured sealant specimens (adhering between two parallel substrates) are exposed in an extended/compressed state to repetitive degradation cycles that combine artificial light/heat/moisture and mechanical cycling. After each cycle the sealants are examined for cohesion, adhesion and visible defects.
- Specimen preparation & support: Detailed design for anodized aluminium supports, spacers, backing (open-cell PE/PU foam) and separators to ensure reproducible movement and adhesion. Cleaning recommendations (e.g., high-purity acetone suggested) are given where manufacturer guidance is absent.
- Conditioning methods: Two conditioning routes (Method A default, Method B option) and use of ventilated ovens or water containers for pre-conditioning are specified.
- Artificial weathering equipment: Fully automated test chambers with controlled radiation, temperature and humidity conforming to ISO 4892 series. Xenon-arc lamps are the default light source; fluorescent UV and open-flame carbon arc are optional, with corresponding test conditions referenced.
- Degradation cycles: Each weathering period is six weeks; a degradation cycle includes weathering plus mechanical cycling and visual examination. The default repeat count is three cycles (or as required).
- Examination & reporting: Visual assessment of quantity, width and depth of cohesive cracks, rating of significant loss of cohesion/adhesion, sectional analysis, photo documentation and a standardized test report are required.
Applications and who uses this standard
ISO 11617:2022 is used for:
- Quality control and type testing of building and civil engineering sealants
- Product development and comparative durability studies by manufacturers
- Independent testing laboratories performing accelerated weathering tests
- Specifiers, façade engineers, architects and regulators requiring validated performance data for weatherproofing sealants
- Procurement and conformity assessment where performance after cyclic movement and weather exposure is critical
