This document specifies the requirements for flexible thermoplastic polyurethane and polyamide tubing conveying compressed air, in sizes from 3 mm to 16 mm (1/8 inch to 1/2 inch) outside diameter. Polyurethane tubings are dedicated for use in the temperature range from –20 °C to 60 °C, while polyamide tubings are dedicated for use in the temperature range from −20 °C to 80 °C. Working pressure depends on the tube size, the service temperature (see Table 13 and Table 14) and tubing material (see Table 15 and Table 16).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11619:2024 - "Pneumatic fluid power - Polyurethane and polyamide tubings for use primarily in pneumatic installations - Dimensions and specification" - defines dimensions, material, performance and testing requirements for flexible thermoplastic polyurethane (PU) and polyamide (PA) tubing used to convey compressed air. The standard covers tubing sizes from 3 mm to 16 mm (1/8 in to 1/2 in OD), specifies temperature service ranges (PU: −20 °C to 60 °C; PA: −20 °C to 80 °C), and links working pressure to tube size, material and service temperature using normative tables.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Materials & construction: PU (polyester or polyether based) and PA (e.g., PA12, PA6) tubing must be homogeneous, free from surface defects and extruded; hydrolysis-resistant PU is required for moist/high-temperature service.
- Dimensions & tolerances: Outside/inside diameters and minimum wall thicknesses are specified in metric and imperial tables. Length tolerances reference ISO 1307.
- Performance testing:
- Hydrostatic (burst) testing at 23 °C ± 2 °C and at elevated temperatures (e.g., 60 °C for PU) per ISO 1402 procedures; fittings conforming to ISO 14743 are recommended.
- Minimum burst pressures are tabulated by size and wall thickness for both PU and PA tubings.
- Maximum working pressure, minimum bend radius, and UV ageing test requirements are specified and depend on material, size and temperature.
- Testing regimes & marking: Type, routine and production tests, marking requirements, and packing/storage recommendations are included. Annex A defines test frequency.
Practical applications and intended users
ISO 11619:2024 is intended for:
- Manufacturers of pneumatic tubing and hose assemblies who need to certify dimensions, burst strength and performance.
- OEMs and designers of pneumatic systems in automation, machine tools, robotics and process control specifying tubing for compressed-air lines.
- Quality, testing and R&D laboratories performing hydrostatic, high-temperature and UV-ageing tests.
- Procurement/specification engineers and maintenance teams requiring compliance proof for safety and interchangeability.
Practical benefits:
- Ensures reliable selection of polyurethane tubing for flexible, low-temperature pneumatic runs and polyamide tubing where higher temperature resistance is required.
- Provides clear criteria for sizing, pressure rating and durability to reduce leaks, failures and downtime.
