The message set specified in this document is designed to support the needs of tractors and implements in using the services of a file server (FS). An FS is a distinct control function (CF) on the mobile implement control system that enables all CFs to store or retrieve data from a file-based storage device.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11783-13:2022 defines the file server (FS) message set for tractors and machinery used in agriculture and forestry. Part 13 of the ISO 11783 series specifies how a distinct control function (CF) on a mobile implement network provides file-based storage services so that any client CF can store, retrieve and manage files on a shared storage device. This edition adds Unicode support for path/file names, removes legacy 8.3 short-name support and includes clarifications to improve protocol implementation and testability.

- Multi-client support & transaction strategy: Each client maintains a transaction number (TAN) counter to detect lost or duplicate requests. The FS caches the last request/response per client and retransmits previous responses when duplicate TANs are detected.
- Timeouts and status: Clients must monitor timeouts. FS shall indicate busy status if a response takes longer than 200 ms; absence of busy status implies a 600 ms request timeout window. Transport protocol timeouts per ISO 11783-3 apply.
- Annexes: Annex A (character set), B (parameters), C (message definitions), D (example file systems), E (path-name behavior) support implementation.
