ISO 11886:2002 specifies terms and definitions of the main types of mechanical equipment for pile driving/extracting, such as pile arrangements on the construction site, pulling, installation of piles at the point of driving, driving and extraction of piles, pile head crushing, etc. Machines for non-mechanical processing, such as the injection of small piles with supporting fluids, are not dealt with in ISO 11886:2002. NOTE Annex A shows examples of pile driving and extracting equipment.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11886:2002 - "Building construction machinery and equipment - Pile driving and extracting equipment - Terminology and commercial specifications" standardizes the vocabulary and commercial data used for mechanical pile driving and extraction machinery. It defines terms and classifications for the main types of piling equipment (impact, vibratory, static), carrier types, leader/guiding systems and piling accessories, and sets out the commercial specification elements manufacturers, buyers and users should state. Machines for non‑mechanical pile methods (for example small‑pile injection with fluids) are explicitly excluded. Annex A provides illustrative examples of equipment and assemblies.
Key Topics
- Terminology and definitions for piling equipment, including:
- Types of pile installation/extraction equipment: impact hammers, impact extractors, vibrators, and static pushing/pulling devices
- Base carriers: crawler‑mounted, wheel‑mounted, rail‑mounted and floating carriers
- Leader/guide systems: direct‑mounted, boom‑supported, swinging, guide cages and free‑riding attachments
- Accessories and components: drive caps, hammer helmets, plates, followers (dolleys), clamping devices, pile guides, acoustic shrouds, shock/vibration‑absorbing devices, pile‑handling units
- Commercial specifications to be declared:
- Main assemblies and configuration (see Annex A examples)
- Dimensional characteristics (overall working and transport dimensions)
- Maximum allowable pile inclination angles (front/rear/side)
- Maximum pile mass and piling equipment mass parameters
- Normative references and safety/classification linkages: ISO 11375, ISO/TR 12603 and EN 996 (safety requirements).
Applications
ISO 11886:2002 is practical for:
- Designers and manufacturers preparing technical documentation and product datasheets for piling rigs, hammers and vibratory units.
- Procurement teams and spec writers who need standardized commercial specifications for tenders and contracts.
- Equipment dealers and fleet managers comparing capacity, carrier compatibility and transport dimensions.
- Site engineers and contractors selecting appropriate pile driving and extraction equipment for driven piles (timber, steel, precast or in‑situ concrete piles).
- Regulatory and standards bodies aligning classification, safety and terminology across projects and countries.
Using ISO 11886 helps ensure clear communication in specifications and procurement, eases comparison of piling equipment (impact hammer vs vibratory vs static), and supports compliance with related safety and classification standards.
