Abstract
Overview
ISO 11933-3:1998 - Components for containment enclosures - Part 3 describes standardized transfer systems used on containment enclosures, with emphasis on leaktight transfer of materials and prevention of contamination spread. The part covers four families of components: plain doors, airlock chambers, double door transfer systems, and leaktight connections for waste drums. Prepared by ISO/TC 85 (Nuclear energy, Radiation protection), it complements other parts of ISO 11933 and related containment standards.
Key topics
- Scope and definitions: Clear definitions for plain doors, airlock chambers (leaktight and shielded), double door systems, and waste-drum connections.
- Designation and reference system: Series allocations and alphanumeric coding for component identification (examples: series 1400–1439 for plain doors, 1500–1579 for airlock chambers, 1600–1639 for double door systems, 1650–1669 for drum connections).
- Mounting and material codes: Standardized letter codes for mounting procedures (B = bonded, W = welded, T = threaded) and materials (e.g., X = stainless steel, O = carbon steel, M = PMMA, C = polycarbonate).
- Design guidance: Descriptions and requirements for shape, assembly, seals, dimensions and examples for each component family (plain doors, airlock chambers, double door systems, leaktight drum connections).
- Operational considerations: Precautions for use, ventilation and classification of airlock chambers, principles of operation for double-door transfers and drum interfaces.
- Normative references & annexes: Cross-references to ISO 11933 parts 1–2, ISO 10648, and other radiation-shielding standards; informative annexes providing examples and bibliography.
Applications
ISO 11933-3 is practical for organizations that design, manufacture, install, procure or operate containment systems in environments where contamination control and radiation protection are critical:
- Nuclear facilities, hot cells and radiological laboratories
- Waste handling and disposal systems (leaktight drum transfer)
- Manufacturers of containment components (doors, airlocks, transfer hatches)
- Facility engineers, procurement teams, radiation protection officers and compliance auditors seeking interchangeability and standardized designation of transfer components
Practical benefits include improved compatibility between supplier systems, consistent selection of materials and mounting methods, and documented principles for safe transfer operations.
