Abstract
Overview
ISO 11933-5:2001 - Components for containment enclosures: Penetrations for electrical and fluid circuits defines selection criteria and describes the design characteristics of components that allow electrical and fluid circuits to pass through leaktight or shielded containment enclosures. Published by ISO (first edition 2001), this part of the ISO 11933 series targets penetrations such as connectors, wall penetrations, distribution boxes, lighting devices, fittings, valves and control devices used in containment systems - particularly in nuclear and other safety-critical environments.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and component types: Applies to electrical components (connectors, fixed/removable penetrations, distribution boxes, lighting) and fluid components (fittings, junctions, valves, control devices).
- Selection principles: Components are generally chosen from manufacturers’ catalogues but must meet the standard’s criteria; “nuclearized” or specially adapted parts are required when radiation resistance, vacuum leaktightness, or other nuclear-specific demands exist.
- Risk assessment & safety analysis: Systematic review of operational constraints and hazards (normal/abnormal conditions, atmosphere, ventilation, grounding, ergonomics) is required before component selection.
- Environmental and operational parameters:
- Internal atmosphere (air, controlled atmosphere, vacuum), pressure and air-change rates
- Heat radiation and temperature control (sources include lighting, chemical reactions, radioactivity)
- Corrosion susceptibility of seals, cables, insulators and filters
- Leaktightness: Penetrations contribute to overall containment leaktightness; the standard emphasizes final leak-rate tests on fully fitted enclosures and corrective measures for assembly/mounting faults. Dedicated tests for special leaktight penetrations are recommended.
- Fire, mechanical and electrical risks: Guidance on limiting fire load, using incombustible atmospheres where appropriate, flame-retardant cables, grounding and selecting fire-resistant components. Mechanical risks from rotating equipment and electrical safety per relevant regulations are covered.
- Design & installation: Part 5 includes detailed sections on design/installation and component-specific recommendations for both electrical (Section 5) and fluid (Section 6) penetrations.
Applications and users
ISO 11933-5 is intended for:
- Nuclear facility engineers, containment designers and safety analysts
- Manufacturers of wall penetrations, connectors, valves and distribution boxes
- Facility operators, maintenance and commissioning teams performing leak testing and verification
- Designers of gloveboxes, hot cells and other containment enclosures requiring leaktight electrical and fluid interfaces
Practical uses include component selection, risk-based specification writing, ensuring interchangeability, preparing procurement requirements, and validating final containment integrity.
