This document defines terms applicable to intraocular lenses, and to the methods used to evaluate them. NOTE Terms are listed in the alphabetical order of the English terms in the English version of this document.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11979-1:2018 - "Ophthalmic implants - Intraocular lenses - Part 1: Vocabulary" is the ISO vocabulary for intraocular lenses (IOLs) and the methods used to evaluate them. The document defines terms in English (alphabetically) to ensure consistent use of language across design, testing, manufacturing, clinical investigation and regulatory activities related to ophthalmic implants and intraocular lenses.
Key Topics
The standard provides clear, standardized definitions for terminology used throughout the IOL lifecycle. Major topic areas include:
- IOL types and optics: definitions for monofocal, multifocal (MIOL), toric, aspheric, spherical, accommodating (AIOL) and phakic (PIOL) lenses.
- Mechanical and geometric features: optic, haptic, body, loops, overall diameter, clear optic, sagittal distance, vault height, positioning hole, optic decentration and tilt.
- Optical measurement terms: dioptric power, paraxial/reduced focal length, base (far) power, near/addition power, cylindrical power, spherical equivalent, meridians of highest/lowest power.
- Packaging, labeling and shelf-life: primary package, storage container, additional wrapping, pre‑loaded delivery system, self‑adhesive label, package integrity, shelf-life, expiration date, sterilization load.
- Testing and material evaluation: material degradation test, photostability, Nd‑YAG laser exposure test, ocular and non‑ocular implantation tests, accelerated shelf‑life study, in situ definition (35 °C ± 2 °C).
- Clinical and regulatory terms: device, manufacturer, finished IOL lot, device history record, delivery/injector systems, best‑case subject, lost to follow‑up, adverse event definitions (cumulative, persistent).
Applications
ISO 11979-1:2018 is used to:
- Harmonize terminology across technical documents, design specifications, testing protocols and clinical reports.
- Support IOL manufacturers in documentation, labeling and regulatory submissions by ensuring consistent language.
- Help clinical investigators, ophthalmic surgeons and test laboratories interpret requirements in other parts of the ISO 11979 series and related standards.
- Reduce ambiguity in procurement, quality control and post‑market surveillance by providing precise definitions for product features and test methods.
Who should use it
- IOL manufacturers and product development teams
- Regulatory affairs professionals and conformity assessors
- Clinical researchers and ophthalmic surgeons involved in trials
- Test laboratories and quality assurance personnel
- Standards writers and procurement specialists in ophthalmic care
