This International Standard specifies test methods for determining the physical properties of synchronous belts used in driving engine parts, such as camshafts, fuel injection pumps, balancing shafts. These test methods are intended to provide a means of characterizing synchronous belt properties for belts which are evaluated and qualified by dynamic laboratory and field testing. NOTE The dimensional characteristics of these belts are the subject of ISO 9010.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12046:2012 defines standardized laboratory test methods to determine the physical properties of automotive synchronous (timing) belts used to drive engine parts such as camshafts, fuel‑injection pumps and balancing shafts. The standard provides a suite of static tests and environmental resistance checks to characterize belt materials, adhesion, strength and durability as part of belt evaluation and qualification programs. Dimensional characteristics are covered separately by ISO 9010.
Key topics and requirements
ISO 12046 is independent of tooth profile and covers the following test program and requirements:
-
Tests included:
- Hardness of rubber core (Shore A or IRHD)
- Tensile strength
- Fabric adhesion
- Tension‑cord adhesion
- Tooth‑shear
- Resistance to high temperature
- Resistance to low temperature
- Resistance to oil
- Resistance to ozone
- Resistance to water
-
General test conditions:
- Standard laboratory environment: 25 ± 5 °C, relative humidity 65 ± 20%, atmospheric pressure 86–106 kPa.
- Specimens tested at least 24 h after vulcanization and conditioned at standard conditions for ≥1 h before testing.
- Test reporting must include tooth count/pitch/profile, materials, production code, test date, number of specimens, test environment and apparatus.
-
Representative procedural details:
- Hardness measured with Shore A durometer or IRHD per ISO 7619 / ISO 48 methods.
- Tensile strength: endless-belt or cut specimens, pulled at 50 ± 5 mm/min until separation.
- Tooth‑shear: uses a specially machined tooth‑shearing chip fitted to belt profile; setting force equals 157 × belt width (N); pull speed 50 ± 5 mm/min.
- Environmental conditioning: e.g., high‑temperature ageing 70 h at 125 ± 2 °C (or 150 ± 2 °C for heat‑resistant belts); oil immersion per ISO 1817; ozone exposure 50 ± 5 pphm at 40 ± 2 °C for 70 h; low‑temperature bend at −40 ± 2 °C.
Applications and users
ISO 12046 is intended for:
- Automotive OEMs and suppliers for belt qualification and supplier acceptance testing.
- Belt manufacturers and R&D teams developing synchronous belt materials and constructions.
- Independent testing laboratories and quality control departments performing routine and type‑approval tests.
- Design and maintenance engineers specifying belts for engine timing and accessory drives.
Practical uses include verifying tensile and adhesion properties, assessing environmental durability (heat, oil, ozone, water, cold), and providing standardized data for material selection, reliability assessment and field correlation.
