ISO 12076 specifies a method for determining, by test and calculation, the actual modulus of steel wire ropes within a specified load range.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12076:2002 defines a standardized test and calculation method to determine the actual (apparent) modulus of elasticity of steel wire ropes within a specified load range. The standard gives manufacturers, suppliers and independent testing laboratories a uniform procedure to measure how a rope’s tension relates to elongation in three common rope conditions: initial (as manufactured), partially stabilized, and fully stabilized.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Determination of the rope’s effective modulus by test and calculation over a specified load range.
- Specimen preparation: Test specimen must be representative and free from defects; free length between grips ≥ 30 × nominal rope diameter.
- Extensometer gauge length:
- For rope diameters ≤ 60 mm: gauge length ≥ 15 × nominal diameter.
- For diameters > 60 mm: gauge length ≥ the larger of one lay pitch or 900 mm.
- Test machine: Must comply with ISO 7500-1 for verification/calibration of force measurement.
- Loading procedure:
- Fix extensometer at a preload equivalent to 10% of the minimum (or nominal) breaking load and zero the gauge.
- For initial-modulus tests measure at ~10% and ~30% of breaking load.
- For partially/fully stabilized conditions, cyclic loading up to 50% may be used; cycles continue until the required stabilization is achieved.
- Record elongation on the ascending load to avoid confusion from hysteresis.
- If partially stabilized, record the number of cycles performed.
- Calculation: The effective modulus is calculated from the change in applied force and the corresponding change in measured extension, using the gauge length and the rope’s metallic cross-sectional area (sum of individual wire areas or nominal metallic area if agreed and reported).
- Test report: Must include identification, test reference, measured modulus value(s) and condition (Ei, Ep‑b, Ef), force range, gauge length, area used in calculation, and number of cycles if partially stabilized.
Applications and users
ISO 12076 is used by:
- Rope manufacturers and suppliers for quality control and product data.
- Independent testing laboratories to provide certified modulus values.
- Design and engineering teams selecting ropes for cranes, elevators, mining, offshore, lifting gear and other systems where accurate stiffness/elongation data are required.
- Buyers and inspection bodies needing consistent, comparable rope modulus measurements.
