This part of ISO 12097 establishes uniform test methods and specifies environmental procedures and requirements for the inflator assemblies of airbag modules in road vehicles. NOTE For testing of the inflator assembly as part of the airbag module, see ISO 12097-2.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12097-3:2002 - "Road vehicles - Airbag components - Part 3: Testing of inflator assemblies" defines uniform test methods, environmental procedures and reporting requirements for airbag inflator assemblies in road vehicles. It focuses on verifying functional behaviour and service life of inflators under simulated life‑cycle loads (handling, transport, storage, mounting, operation). This part complements ISO 12097‑2 (testing of inflator as part of the complete airbag module) and refers to vocabulary in ISO 12097‑1.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and safety: Requirements for safe handling and manufacturer instructions; CAUTION about possibility of accidental firing during tests. Gas and particulate emissions after ignition must not be toxic within 30 minutes in a 2.5 m3 enclosed room and must not be strongly irritating.
- Test programme: A defined sample set (typically 12 IAs - three exposed through environmental tests and nine or ten unexposed) and prescribed sequences of environmental and performance tests.
- Environmental tests:
- Drop test (drop height specified) to assess handling/transport damage
- Mechanical impact test at multiple temperatures (e.g., −35 °C, 23 °C, 85 °C)
- Vacuum test (simulates air transport/high altitude)
- Simultaneous vibration and temperature (combined thermal/mechanical stress)
- Thermal humidity cycling (condensation, corrosion and water ingress effects)
- Performance tests:
- Electrostatic discharge (ESD)
- Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) - units must not be ignited by electromagnetic coupling
- Tank tests at defined temperatures, gas/particulate analyses
- Bonfire test, burst tests and trigger device testing
- Measurements & reporting: Visual inspection, photographic records, squib resistance, ambient conditions, orientation axes and all unusual observations must be recorded.
Practical applications
- Design verification of inflator assemblies during development
- Type approval, compliance checks and supplier qualification
- Environmental robustness validation for production and quality control
- Root‑cause analysis after field incidents or accelerated ageing studies
Who uses this standard
- Airbag/inflator manufacturers and component suppliers
- Automotive OEMs (safety and validation teams)
- Independent test laboratories and certification bodies
- Regulatory agencies and conformity assessment organizations
- R&D and reliability engineers focused on passive safety systems
