ISO 12154:2014 specifies a method for rapid and efficient determination of the skeleton density of solid material samples of regular or irregular shape, whether powdered or in one piece, by means of a gas displacement pycnometer.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12154:2014 specifies a standardized method for rapid determination of skeleton density of solid materials using gas displacement pycnometry. The method applies to samples of regular or irregular shape, either powdered or in one piece. Skeleton density (mass divided by the solid skeleton volume) is measured by expanding an inert analysis gas (commonly helium) between a sample chamber and a reference chamber under isothermal conditions and recording equilibrated pressures.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Principle: Volumetric determination of solid skeleton volume by gas expansion between two chambers; skeleton density = sample mass / skeleton volume.
- Apparatus: Gas expansion pycnometer with fixed-volume sample chamber, calibrated reference sample (typically stainless‑steel calibration spheres), pressure sensor (gauge or absolute), valves and tubing.
- Analysis gas: Preferably helium (minimum purity 99.996%) because of near‑ideal behavior and pore penetration; alternatives (nitrogen, argon, SF6, dry air) are recommended for some organic or cellular materials.
- Sample preparation: Follow ISO 14488 for sampling; samples must be dry and free of atmospheric contaminants. Use an analytical balance readable to at least 0.1% of sample mass. Sample cup should be substantially filled (typically at least two‑thirds). Drying, purging, or vacuum procedures are required depending on material sensitivity.
- Calibration and accuracy: Calibrate with traceable reference volumes; control temperature and ensure equal initial pressures in chambers. Sample chamber volumes commonly range from ~0.1 cm3 to ~500 cm3, and measurement accuracy relates to percent chamber occupancy.
- Special considerations: Gas pycnometry measures skeleton density (includes closed pores but excludes open pores and interparticle voids). Helium can penetrate thin-walled closed cells and may give misleading results for permeable organic/cellular samples; powdering the sample and re‑measuring helps detect closed pores.
Applications
- Quality control and material characterization in: powders, ceramics, catalysts, carbon materials, metal powders, pharmaceuticals, polymers, building materials, and additive manufacturing feedstocks.
- Research and development for particle characterization, porosity assessment, bulk solid density verification, and input data for porosimetry or BET surface-area analyses.
- Ideal for irregularly shaped samples and rapid laboratory throughput where accurate solid-phase volume is required.

ISO 12154 is essential when you need traceable, repeatable density determination by gas pycnometry, providing guidance on apparatus, sample handling, calibration, and reporting to obtain reliable skeleton density values.
