ISO 12180-1:2011 defines the terms and concepts related to cylindricity of individual complete integral features only.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12180-1:2011 - Geometrical product specifications (GPS) - Cylindricity - Part 1: Vocabulary and parameters of cylindrical form - defines the terms, concepts and parameters used to describe cylindricity for individual complete integral cylindrical features. It is a GPS general standard that sets the vocabulary and parameter definitions (not measurement procedures) for assessing cylindrical form relative to specified reference cylinders.
Key topics
- Scope: Applies only to individual complete integral cylindrical features (external or internal).
- Vocabulary and definitions: Clear definitions for extracted surfaces, generatrix profiles, local deviations and reference elements.
- Reference cylinders: Formalizes fitting conventions including:
- Minimum Zone (MZ) - pair of coaxial cylinders with least radial separation
- Least Squares (LS) - cylinder minimizing sum of squared local deviations
- Minimum Circumscribed (MC) and Maximum Inscribed (MI)
- Parameters of cylindrical form:
- Peak-to-valley cylindricity deviation (defined for all reference cylinders)
- Peak-to-reference and reference-to-valley deviations (LS-based)
- Root-mean-square (RMS) cylindricity deviation (LS-based)
- Generatrix straightness, cylinder taper, local radii and cylinder radii peak-to-valley
- Extraction & filtering: The extracted surface and any additional filtering (Gaussian, spline, wavelet, morphological, etc.) affect definitions and must be stated unambiguously.
- Relationship to other form standards: Radial cross-sections (roundness) and straightness are linked to ISO 12181 and ISO 12780 series respectively.
- Informative annexes: Mathematical definition of tolerance zones, assessment considerations and synoptic term tables.
Applications
ISO 12180-1:2011 is used to:
- Standardize terminology and parameters in engineering drawings, specifications and inspection reports.
- Support metrology and quality control for shafts, bores, bearing surfaces, hydraulic cylinders and other cylindrical components.
- Guide CMM, form tester and optical measurement software development by providing unambiguous parameter definitions.
- Ensure consistent interpretation of cylindricity tolerances across design, manufacturing and inspection teams.
Who should use it
- Mechanical design engineers and CAD/CAM engineers
- Metrologists and quality assurance professionals
- Manufacturing engineers and machinists producing precision cylindrical parts
- Calibration labs and measurement software developers
- Standards writers and procurement/specification authors
