ISO 1219-2:2011 establishes the main rules for drawing hydraulic and pneumatic circuit diagrams using graphical symbols drawn in accordance with ISO 1219-1. ISO 1219-2:2011 also applies to circuit diagrams relating to cooling systems, lubrication systems, cooling lubricant systems and systems of technical gases used in conjunction with fluid power applications.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 1219-2:2012 - "Fluid power systems and components - Graphical symbols and circuit diagrams - Part 2: Circuit diagrams" sets the main rules for drawing clear, consistent hydraulic and pneumatic circuit diagrams. It builds on the graphical symbol definitions in ISO 1219-1 and also covers circuit diagrams for associated systems such as cooling, lubrication, cooling-lubricant systems and technical gases used with fluid power equipment. The standard provides presentation, layout and identification rules to ensure unambiguous schematic documentation across designs, manufacturing, maintenance and technical communication.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Diagram presentation and format: general rules for how circuit diagrams should be drawn and arranged to ensure readability and consistency.
- Layout and equipment representation: guidance on placing components and connecting lines so functional relationships are clear.
- Identification of components and hoses: standard identification codes for components, hose assemblies and ports (including structured codes for installation, medium, circuit and component numbers).
- Piping and line identification: rules for labeling piping, optional line identification numbers and technical information to support installation and servicing.
- Technical information on diagrams: instructions for documenting circuit function, electrical reference designations and component-specific data (pumps, reservoirs, valves, actuators, filters, accumulators, sensors, gauges, timers, etc.).
- Supplementary material & examples: annexes include illustrative examples (hydraulic, pneumatic, lubrication diagrams) and a sample parts list to support practical implementation.
Practical Applications and Who Uses It
ISO 1219-2 is essential for anyone involved with fluid power systems who needs accurate, standardized schematics:
- Design and R&D engineers creating hydraulic and pneumatic systems
- CAD drafters and technical illustrators preparing circuit diagrams
- Manufacturers producing documentation for components and machines
- Maintenance technicians and service organizations troubleshooting or repairing systems
- Technical authors and training developers producing manuals and instructional materials
- Safety and compliance teams ensuring consistent documentation for regulatory and quality processes
Using ISO 1219-2 improves cross-team communication, reduces errors in assembly and maintenance, and supports interoperability between suppliers by providing unambiguous diagrams and identification codes.
Related Standards (if applicable)
- ISO 1219-1 - defines the graphical symbols used in fluid power diagrams (referenced and required for Part 2).
- Other parts of the ISO 1219 series address symbol definitions and related conventions that complement ISO 1219-2.
