Abstract
Overview
ISO 12215-1:2000 specifies minimum material requirements for hull construction of small craft using thermosetting resins and glass-fibre reinforcement. It applies to small craft with hull length up to 24 m (per ISO 8666) and defines the required properties for gelcoat, topcoat, laminating resins, glass reinforcements and a defined reference laminate. The standard is intended to harmonize material requirements used in small-craft scantling and hull-load design.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope: Materials for hull laminates (thermosetting resins and glass fibres) for craft ≤ 24 m.
- Reinforcement (glass fibre):
- Reference material: E‑glass per ISO 2078 (other fibres acceptable if equal or better).
- Delivery limits: moisture content (roving 0.2%, chopped strand mat 0.5%, fabrics 0.2%), mass tolerances (−5% to +10%), loss on ignition tolerance (+20%).
- Suppliers must declare compatibility, storage and handling instructions; boat manufacturers must retain documentation.
- Resins:
- Liquid resin property tolerances: viscosity ±20%, gel time ±20%, monomer content ±5%, density ±5%, mineral content ±5% (where applicable).
- Cured resin performance (Types A, B, C): minimum tensile strength, elongation, flexural strength and modulus, heat deflection temperature, water absorption and Barcol hardness are defined after a postcure (24 h at 50 °C). Resins for gelcoat/topcoat and laminating resins must meet the appropriate Type requirements or be justified for specific applications.
- Fillers/additives and catalysts must be used as manufacturer recommends to ensure wet‑out and cure.
- Reference laminate:
- Minimum mechanical properties (post cure): ultimate tensile strength 80 MPa; tensile modulus 6 350 MPa; ultimate flexural strength 135 MPa; flexural modulus 5 200 MPa; in‑plane shear 50 MPa; short‑beam interlaminar shear 15 MPa.
- Reference laminate composition: glass chopped‑strand mat + resin, glass content ≤ 30% by mass.
- Resin manufacturers must demonstrate that these properties can be achieved and declare process substances used.
Applications
- Designers and naval architects specifying laminate materials and scantlings for recreational and commercial small craft.
- Boat manufacturers and laminators verifying supplier data and material declarations for resin systems, gelcoats, fabrics, rovings and mats.
- Material suppliers and test laboratories for compliance testing and documentation of resin/fibre properties.
