This document specifies technical requirements and test methods for windows, portlights, hatches, deadlights and doors on small craft with a length of hull, LH, as defined in ISO 8666:2016, of up to 24 m. It takes into account the type of craft, its design category, and the location of the appliance. The appliances considered in this document are only those that are critical for the craft's watertightness. Openings and non-opening devices fitted below area I (see 3.5.2) are excluded from the scope of this document.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12216:2020 - Small craft - Windows, portlights, hatches, deadlights and doors - Strength and watertightness requirements specifies technical requirements and test methods for openings and their coverings on small craft with a hull length (LH) up to 24 m (as defined in ISO 8666:2016). The standard addresses appliances that are critical to a craft’s watertightness, taking into account craft type, design category and the appliance location (for example Area I and Area IIa). Openings and non-opening devices fitted below Area I are excluded.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and definitions: Clear definitions for openings, appliances, plates, glazing types and location areas (Clause 3).
- General requirements: Mandatory strength and minimum watertightness levels, and requirements to reference other international standards (Clause 4).
- Materials: Guidance and restrictions for plate materials including acrylics and glass (Clause 5).
- Appliance design and fastening: Requirements for plate end-connections, simply supported and semi‑fixed plates, fastening, glued plates, stiffeners and mechanical attachments (Clause 6).
- Area‑specific rules: Special provisions for appliances in Area I and Area IIa, flush-deck hatches, sliding appliances, washboards, deadlights, multihull escape hatches and prefabricated appliances (Clause 6.3).
- Strength assessment methods: Multiple assessment routes including direct calculation methods for monolithic and laminated plates, an advanced calculation method for certain non‑glazed plates, and pressure/test assessment methods (Clause 7).
- Tests and annexes: Normative test methods (Annex D) covering pressure and watertightness testing, mechanical link tests and impact resistance specifications (Annex E). Precalculated thickness tables and supporting informative annexes are included (Annexes A–F).
Practical applications - who uses ISO 12216:2020
- Boat and yacht designers and naval architects specifying glazed openings and hatch systems.
- Small craft manufacturers and component suppliers (windows, portlights, hatches, doors).
- Test laboratories performing strength, impact and watertightness testing.
- Classification societies, certification bodies and surveyors assessing compliance with safety and watertightness requirements.
- Regulatory bodies adopting standards for craft design categories and equipment safety.
