ISO 12219-4:2013 specifies a qualitative and quantitative analytical method for vapour-phase organic compounds (volatile and some semi-volatile) released from car trim materials under simulated real use conditions using small emission test chambers (small chamber). Small chambers are intended to provide a transfer function to vehicle level emissions. This method is intended for evaluating new car interior trim components but can, in principle, be applied to used car components. Target compounds include VOCs (conventionally defined as organic compounds in the volatility range n-hexane to n-hexadecane) and volatile carbonyl compounds such as formaldehyde. The specified analytical procedure for VOCs is ISO 16000‑6 and for formaldehyde and some other light carbonyl compounds is ISO 16000‑3. ISO 12219-4:2013 is complementary to ASTM D5116 and VDA 276, and provides third party test laboratories and manufacturing industry with an approach for: a) identifying the effect of real use conditions on specific VOC emissions data; b) comparing emissions from various assemblies with regards to specific VOC emissions; c) evaluating and sorting specific assemblies regarding specific VOC emissions data; d) providing specific VOC emissions data to develop and verify a correlation between material level methods and the vehicle level method; e) evaluating prototype, "low-emission" assemblies during development.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12219-4:2013 - "Interior air of road vehicles - Part 4: Small chamber method" - defines a qualitative and quantitative test method to measure volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from vehicle interior parts and materials under simulated real‑use conditions. Using a controlled small emission test chamber, the standard captures vapour‑phase organics (VOCs and some semi‑volatile compounds) and specific volatile carbonyls (e.g., formaldehyde) to generate material‑level emission data that can be related to vehicle‑level indoor air quality.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and targets: Measures VOCs in the volatility range conventionally from n‑hexane to n‑hexadecane and volatile carbonyls; applicable to new (and in principle used) trim components.
- Small chamber concept: Uses a dedicated small chamber as a transfer function to vehicle‑level emissions; emphasizes controlled temperature, humidity, clean air supply and ideal air mixing.
- Analytical procedures: VOC sampling and analysis according to ISO 16000‑6 (Tenax TA sorbent, thermal desorption, GC‑MS or GC‑FID); formaldehyde and light carbonyl analysis per ISO 16000‑3.
- Performance and QA: Defines terms and metrics such as air change rate, product loading factor, recovery rate, and specific emission rate; includes requirements for airtightness, recovery/sink checks, supply air quality and quality control (QA/QC) procedures.
- Test protocol elements: Preparation of test specimens and chambers, cleaning/purification, controlled test runs, calculation of emission rates and reporting requirements.
Applications and users
ISO 12219‑4:2013 is used by:
- Automotive OEMs and suppliers for screening and ranking trim materials and assemblies during design and prototype development (including "low‑emission" products).
- Third‑party test laboratories that perform standardized VOC emission testing for certification, product comparison and supplier qualification.
- R&D and indoor air quality specialists who develop correlations between material‑level methods and whole‑vehicle measurements.
- Regulatory and quality teams assessing compliance with health/safety or customer emission targets.
Practical benefits include comparable, reproducible VOC emission data for material selection, emissions reduction efforts, product acceptance and building material‑to‑vehicle level correlations.
