This part of ISO 12240 specifies dimensions, tolerances and radial internal clearances for various dimension series of spherical plain bearing rod ends. The dimensions and tolerances specified in this part of ISO 12240 have been selected to permit the design and use of spherical plain bearing rod ends which incorporate radial spherical plain bearings having various sliding material combinations. The specified tolerance values apply for finished spherical plain bearing rod ends before any coating, plating, ring splitting or fracturing. Spherical plain bearing rod ends need not conform to the designs illustrated but compliance is required as regards dimensions, tolerances and radial internal clearances specified. NOTE — Spherical plain bearing rod ends for airframe applications and specific spherical plain baring rod ends for direct connection to hydraulic cylinders are not covered by this part of ISO 12240.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12240-4:1998 - "Spherical plain bearings - Part 4: Spherical plain bearing rod ends" is an international standard that specifies dimensions, tolerances and radial internal clearances for spherical plain bearing rod ends. It defines several dimension series (E, EH, G, GH, K) and associated rod-end types (external/internal thread, strengthened shanks, welding ends, integral or cartridge designs) to support the design and manufacture of rod ends that accept radial spherical plain bearings with a variety of sliding material combinations.
Key topics and requirements
- Dimension series and types: Distinguishes series E, G and K (and strengthened EH/GH) to match different radial bearing inserts and shank designs.
- Dimensions and tolerances: Specifies nominal dimensions and tolerance classes for finished rod ends - tolerances apply before any coating, plating, ring splitting or fracturing.
- Radial internal clearance: Defines the method and values for radial internal clearance (mean radial displacement between rings) for different groups and material combinations (steel/steel and steel/bronze).
- Angles of tilt: Gives approximate tilt angles that indicate allowable misalignment between inner and outer ring axes without reducing theoretical contact area.
- Design flexibility: Rod ends need not match illustrated designs as long as they comply with the specified dimensions, tolerances and clearances.
- Lubrication provisions: Notes positioning and sizing of lubricating nipples may vary by size and type; placement and type are subject to agreement or manufacturer’s discretion.
- Exclusions: Rod ends for airframe applications and those for direct connection to hydraulic cylinders are explicitly excluded.
Practical applications
ISO 12240-4 is used where consistent geometry and fit of spherical plain bearing rod ends are critical for mechanical linkage performance, interchangeability and safety. Typical applications include:
- Pivot joints and linkage ends in industrial machinery
- Steering and suspension linkages in off‑road and automotive equipment
- Actuator and control rod connections (excluding direct hydraulic‑cylinder rod-end types covered elsewhere)
- Design and selection of replacements and spare parts for maintenance programs
Using the standard helps ensure interchangeability, predictable misalignment capacity, correct bearing preload/clearance and compatibility with chosen sliding material combinations.
Who should use this standard
- Mechanical designers and machine builders specifying rod-end bearings
- Bearing and component manufacturers for product design and quality control
- Procurement and maintenance engineers selecting replacement parts or verifying supplier compliance
- Test and inspection personnel defining acceptance criteria for finished rod-ends
