This document specifies cleanliness assessment procedures for evaluating the amount of debris found within the clean side of diesel fuel injection assemblies, which could lead to a reduction in the system’s operational effectiveness. While other International Standards, e.g. ISO 16232, relate to cleanliness of components used in road vehicle fluid circuits, this document is focused on diesel fuel injection assemblies as supplied to diesel engine manufacturers or the service market.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12345:2021 - Diesel engines - Cleanliness assessment of fuel injection equipment specifies procedures to evaluate debris and particulate contamination in the clean side of diesel fuel injection assemblies as supplied to engine manufacturers or the service market. The standard targets contamination introduced during manufacturing, assembly or servicing that can reduce operational effectiveness of fuel injection systems. It emphasizes careful sample handling and verification of test equipment because contaminant levels are typically very low.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose: Assessment methods focused on fuel injection assemblies (injectors, rails, high- and low‑pressure components) rather than general vehicle fluid circuits.
- Test apparatus and verification: Detailed requirements for pressure sources, pumps, verification injectors, collecting vessels and flushing equipment. The standard stresses equipment cleanliness verification before testing.
- Test procedures: Defined procedures for a range of components and states - dynamic tests, high‑pressure and low‑pressure flushing, syringe/hand‑flush methods and continuous flow checks.
- Contamination measurement: Methods for collecting and analysing contaminants including gravimetric analysis, microscopic analysis and particle size distribution reporting.
- Reporting and designation: Results reporting follows the Component Cleanliness Code (CCC) (aligned with ISO 16232), replacing the earlier FIECC system used in prior editions.
- Annexes and verification: Normative annexes give typical test equipment layouts, detailed flushing test methods, and procedures for verifying initial cleanliness of test equipment.
Practical applications and users
Who uses ISO 12345:2021:
- Engine manufacturers (OEMs) specifying incoming component cleanliness
- Fuel injection equipment suppliers for production quality control
- Aftermarket/service organizations performing acceptance or return‑to‑service checks
- Test laboratories and quality teams performing contamination analysis
- R&D and failure‑investigation teams diagnosing wear or assembly‑related contamination
Practical benefits:
- Prevents premature wear and loss of injector performance by identifying particulate risks
- Provides repeatable acceptance criteria and test methods for supplier control and warranty disputes
- Guides selection and verification of test apparatus and sample‑analysis techniques for consistent results
- Supports production process improvement by pinpointing contamination sources
