This International Standard specifies tests and measurement methods for solo mopeds (defined in ISO 3833) equipped with one or more antilock, and one or more independent, braking systems. Its purpose is to establish uniform worldwide test procedures for such systems. This International Standard sets out procedures for the following types of straight-line braking tests: utilization-of-adhesion test; wheel-lock check test; tests with ABS failed; complementary tests that could assist in the assessment and development of braking systems. NOTE Reference is made in this International Standard to L-category vehicles, generally referring to solo mopeds (L1), drawn from Regulation No. 78 and the Consolidated Resolution on the Construction of Vehicles (R.E.3) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN-ECE). The values given in this International Standard enclosed by square brackets are from the same regulation (02 series of amendments), and are included for information.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12366:2001 - "Two‑wheeled mopeds - Antilock braking systems (ABS) - Tests and measurement methods" - defines standardized test procedures and measurement methods for antilock braking systems (ABS) fitted to solo mopeds (ISO category L1). The standard establishes uniform, repeatable straight‑line braking tests to assess ABS performance and braking-system behaviour under controlled conditions worldwide.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Solo mopeds (ISO 3833 / L1) equipped with one or more ABS and/or independent braking systems.
- Test types specified:
- Utilization‑of‑adhesion test (measures braking performance with ABS active vs disabled)
- Wheel‑lock check test (moped unladen)
- Tests with ABS failed (for electronically controlled systems)
- Complementary tests to assist development and assessment
- Test surfaces: Two target surfaces - one with coefficient of adhesion ≤ [0.45] and one with ≥ [0.80] (values in square brackets are from UN‑ECE Regulation No. 78 and included for information).
- Test conditions:
- Level, clean test lane; wind ≤ 5 m/s; record ambient temperature
- Brake temperature before each stop should not exceed 100 °C
- Test speed tolerance ±5 km/h
- Preparation and instrumentation:
- Tyres at manufacturer’s pressures
- Minimum rider + equipment mass: 85 kg; instrumentation mass ≤ 10% of unladen moped
- Typical instruments: wheel‑speed sensors, pressure transducers, speedometer/third‑wheel, control force transducers, outriggers, multi‑channel recorder (sufficient bandwidth for ABS cycling)
- Performance measures and formulas:
- Braking rate z = 0.56 / t, where t = time to reduce speed from 40 km/h to 20 km/h (or scaled for lower maximum speed)
- Coefficient of adhesion k is the maximum z with ABS disabled; adhesion utilization e = z_with_ABS / z_with_ABS_disabled
- Operational rules: Controls applied rapidly (0.2–0.5 s) and held constant; ABS and brakes not manually adjusted during tests except where specified.
Applications and users
ISO 12366 is used by:
- Moped and motorcycle manufacturers for ABS validation and design verification
- Vehicle test laboratories and independent certification bodies performing standardized ABS tests
- Regulatory agencies aligning national test regimes with international practice
- Safety engineers and researchers evaluating braking performance, ABS calibration and failure modes
Practical benefits include consistent, comparable test data for ABS development, regulatory compliance, and improved rider safety through validated braking performance.
