This International Standard specifies a dynamic test method for mechanical hook-type connections and hook coupling devices, as well as a static test of their keeper plates. It is applicable to hooks meeting the requirements of ISO 6489-1 used on towing vehicles with an unladen mass of up to 10 t. Towing vehicles with a greater unladen mass are nevertheless treated as 10 t towing vehicles, especially with regard to their reference mass.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12368:2001 specifies test methods and requirements for mechanical hook‑type connections and hook coupling devices used on agricultural towing vehicles. The standard defines a dynamic fatigue test for hooks (with keeper plates and locking mechanisms) and a static test for keeper plates. It applies to hooks that meet ISO 6489-1 dimensions and to towing vehicles with an unladen mass up to 10 t (vehicles with greater unladen mass are treated as 10 t for reference mass calculations).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and definitions: Defines unladen mass, reference mass, hook coupling device, keeper plate and static vertical load used in test calculations.
- Test preparation: Devices must be production specification, mounted to a test bed or chassis with attachments that do not deflect significantly under load.
- Dynamic test (hook coupling device):
- A pulsating tensile force is applied to a hitch ring per the standard’s loading geometry.
- Force alternates between 0.05F and 1.0F for the full test duration.
- Frequency of dynamic loading shall not exceed 5 Hz unless proven not to affect results.
- Load direction includes a downward angle calculated from vertical and horizontal components and a 5° lateral inclination.
- For steel components, endurance testing is specified (see clause 8).
- Static test (keeper plate):
- Apply 0.5F upward and rearward at 45° to the horizontal, maintained for 1 minute within the hook contact area.
- Two‑ram loading is permitted where single‑ram 45° application is impractical.
- Acceptance criteria:
- Visual and crack‑indication inspection (e.g., dye penetrant) for cracks and tears after testing.
- The gap between keeper plate and hook shall not exceed 10 mm during tests.
- Labeling and reporting:
- Required label elements include manufacturer, identification number, reference mass and static vertical load.
- Test report must record manufacturer, materials, vehicle makes/models, reference mass/S values used, and test results.
Applications and users
ISO 12368 is used for:
- Design verification and durability testing of agricultural hook couplings and keeper plates.
- Type approval, quality control and certification by manufacturers and test laboratories.
- Compliance checks for OEMs, component suppliers, agricultural vehicle fleet managers and regulatory bodies.
- Lab testing for aftermarket replacement hooks and safety inspections.
