This document specifies the safety requirements for lifejackets, performance level 100. It is applicable to lifejackets used by adults, children and infants, for use in sheltered or calm water, or when the users are fully clothed.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12402-4:2020 - Personal flotation devices - Part 4: Lifejackets, performance level 100 - Safety requirements specifies safety, performance and information requirements for lifejackets at performance level 100. This second-edition international standard (2020) applies to lifejackets for adults, children and infants intended for use in sheltered or calm water, or when users are fully clothed. It is part of the ISO 12402 series for personal flotation devices (PFDs) and replaces the 2006 edition with technical revisions.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard covers the full lifecycle of a level-100 lifejacket, including design, materials, testing and documentation. Main technical topics include:
- Scope and classification (Clauses 1–4): distinguishes lifejackets from buoyancy aids and defines performance levels within ISO 12402 (e.g., levels 50, 100, 150, 275).
- General requirements (Clause 5.1): materials, components, inflation methods, body straps, ride-up prevention, inflation-status indicators, oral inflation and magnetic properties.
- Buoyancy types and total buoyancy (Clause 5.3): allowable buoyancy sources - inherently buoyant materials, inflatable chambers and hybrid systems - and how total buoyancy is specified and verified.
- Conspicuousness (Clause 5.4): colour and retroreflective material requirements to aid detection.
- Strength and performance (Clauses 5.5–5.6): structural strength, donning, fit, in‑water behaviour and multi‑chamber systems to ensure face-up support.
- Marking and documentation (Clauses 6–8): required markings, manufacturer information, consumer information at point of sale and rearming/repacking guidance.
- Changes from previous edition: updated definitions, modified level-50 requirements, moved lifting-loop rules to ISO 12402-8:2020, and added strength and performance updates.
Practical applications and who uses this standard
ISO 12402-4:2020 is used by:
- Manufacturers and designers of lifejackets to design compliant level-100 products.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors performing safety and performance testing.
- Procurement officers, safety managers and employers selecting PFDs for work or recreational activities in sheltered or calm waters.
- Retailers and product managers, for accurate point-of-sale consumer information and marking.
- Regulators and standards bodies referencing industry best practice (note: SOLAS-regulated seagoing ship lifejackets are governed by IMO regulations and not covered by this part).
Related standards
- ISO 12402 series (other parts cover buoyancy aids, higher performance levels and testing methods).
- IMO SOLAS requirements (for seagoing ship lifejackets) - ISO 12402-4 is not a substitute for SOLAS compliance where applicable.
