Abstract
Overview
ISO 12478-1:1997 - "Cranes - Maintenance manual - Part 1: General" provides guidelines for the preparation and presentation of crane maintenance manuals. It specifies what information a crane manufacturer should include so the maintenance manual is clear, usable and consistent with international conventions. The standard covers general layout, required preliminary data, structure and content for preventive and corrective maintenance, lubrication/fluids data, wear limits, test/inspection references and safety during maintenance operations.
Key Topics and Requirements
-
Presentation and format
- Manual must be simple, durable, and user-friendly; use illustrations, diagrams and tables adjacent to text.
- Use internationally recognized symbols, units and terminology (see ISO 31, ISO 4306).
- Manual language: manufacturer’s normal language unless other arrangement is agreed.
- Include front/back cover or first-page data: title, reference number, crane identification, serial numbers, manufacturer contact, table of contents and basic characteristics.
-
Structure and volumes
- Manuals may be single or multi-volume depending on crane type and user needs; cross-reference between volumes to avoid duplication.
-
Preventive maintenance
- Provide maintenance operations, recommended frequency and estimated labour in tabular schedules.
- Design frequencies to combine operations for efficient use of crane and personnel.
-
Corrective maintenance
- Include troubleshooting, sequential disassembly/assembly instructions (torques, preloads), parts to check for wear/cracking, special tools, and handling/lifting instructions.
-
Wear limits and parts
- List wear limits and discard criteria for replaceable items (brakes, chains, ropes) in a table format.
-
Lubrication and fluids
- Provide lubricant/fluid specifications, tank and circuit capacities, recommended types/brands and a lubrication schedule/diagram (Annex A provides an example).
-
Safety during maintenance
- Include safe-worksite measures, permit-to-work systems (see ISO 12480), lockout procedures, stored-energy release, personal protective equipment and handling of hazardous materials.
- Annex B includes example warning/safety signs.
-
Testing and inspection
- Test and inspection procedures should follow ISO 9927-1.
Applications - Who Uses It
- Crane manufacturers - to prepare compliant maintenance manuals.
- Maintenance engineers and technicians - for planning preventive and corrective work and lubrication regimes.
- Safety managers and site supervisors - to implement safe maintenance procedures and permit-to-work systems.
- Inspectors and regulatory bodies - to verify documentation and maintenance practices.
- Technical writers - to create standardized, user-friendly maintenance documentation.
