This document specifies test methods relating to resistance to high temperature, humidity and radiation for laminated glass and laminated safety glass for use in building.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12543-4:2021 - "Glass in building - Laminated glass and laminated safety glass - Part 4: Test methods for durability" specifies standardized laboratory methods to assess the durability of laminated glass and laminated safety glass used in buildings. The standard focuses on resistance to high temperature, humidity, and radiation, defining specimen requirements, test procedures, result expression and reporting requirements for durability testing.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Tests assess changes in interlayer and laminate integrity (bubbles, delamination, haze, cloudiness) under thermal, humid and radiative exposure.
- Test specimens: Minimum size 300 × 200 mm; three specimens per test; specimens must represent production items or be cut from larger panes with at least one original edge preserved.
- High-temperature test:
- Test temperature: 100 °C (oven or boiling water).
- Two procedures: Procedure A (short) - 2 h at 100 °C; Procedure B (long) - 16 h at 100 °C.
- Oven heating-up times and boiling-water pre‑conditioning are specified; inspection after cooling.
- Humidity test:
- Duration: 2 weeks with specimens vertical and adequately spaced.
- With condensation: specimens over water at 50 °C (≈100% RH).
- Without condensation: climate chamber at 50 °C and (80 ± 5)% RH.
- For fire‑resistant laminates, only delamination is counted as a fault (other interlayer changes may be expected).
- Radiation tests:
- Simulated solar radiation with three methods: radiation wall, mercury vapour arc lamp, xenon arc source (ISO 4892-2 referenced).
- Procedures and result expressions are provided, including provisions for fire-resistant products.
- Result inspection & reporting:
- Visual inspection distance: 300–500 mm against a white diffuse background.
- Edge fault disregards: 15 mm from original edge, 20 mm from cut edge (and 10 mm from any crack).
- Test report must include reference to ISO 12543-4:2021, chosen procedure, laminate structure and thicknesses, specimen details, observed faults, deviations and date.
Applications and users
ISO 12543-4:2021 is used by:
- Glass manufacturers and laminators for product development and quality control.
- Independent testing laboratories performing durability certification and type‑testing.
- Façade engineers, architects and specifiers to verify long‑term performance claims.
- Building product certifiers and compliance bodies for regulatory evidence on safety glass durability.
Practical uses include validating new interlayer formulations, assessing weathering resistance of laminated assemblies, and generating test reports required for performance specifications or regulatory approval.
