This document specifies defects of finished sizes and test methods with regard to the appearance of laminated glass and laminated safety glass when looking through the glass. All references to laminated glass in this document refer to both laminated glass and laminated safety glass. NOTE Special attention is paid to acceptability criteria in the vision area. This document is applicable to finished sizes at the time of supply.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12543-6:2021 - "Glass in building - Laminated glass and laminated safety glass - Part 6: Appearance" defines visual acceptance criteria and test methods for the appearance of finished laminated glass and laminated safety glass when viewed through the glazing. The standard focuses on defects seen in the vision area, edge zones and whole-panel inspection at the time of supply. It is part of the ISO 12543 series covering laminated glass products.
Key topics and requirements
- Observation method: Panels are inspected vertically, parallel to a grey matte screen, illuminated by diffuse daylight or equivalent, and examined perpendicularly from 2 m. An alternative lot-observation method is described in Annex A for jumbos and standard sizes.
- Defect types defined: point defects (opaque spots, bubbles, inclusions), linear defects (scratches, snags), glaçures (edge-starting hairline cracks), false folds and striures (interlayer deformations/distortions), and foreign bodies.
- Vision-area acceptance:
- Defects < 0.5 mm are ignored; defects > 3 mm are not allowed in the vision area.
- Quantified acceptance limits for point defects depend on panel area and number of glass plies (see standard for tabled counts).
- Linear defects < 30 mm are acceptable; longer linear defects are limited by panel surface (tabulated).
- False folds and striures are not permitted in the visible area; glaçures are not admitted.
- Edge-zone requirements:
- Edge zone widths: typically 15 mm for panels ≤ 5 m², 20 mm for panels > 5 m².
- For edges captured in a rebate, defects up to 5 mm diameter permitted provided defective edge area ≤ 5 % of border area.
- Free edges must meet ISO 12543-5 edge finishing (ground, polished, bevelled); interlayer recessions > 2 mm are not allowed.
- Thermally treated glass: If laminated glass includes tempered or heat-treated glass, optical distortions and anisotropy from those processes can be visible; applicable thermal-treatment standards also apply.
- Batch (lot) inspection: Annex A provides a practical method for inspecting lots (e.g., up to 3 t for jumbos) with defect removal and re-inspection procedures.
Applications and who uses it
- Glazing manufacturers and fabricators use ISO 12543-6 for production quality control and final acceptance of laminated and laminated safety glass.
- Architects, façade engineers and specifiers reference the standard in performance and procurement documents to control visible quality in windows, façades, balustrades and overhead glazing.
- Quality inspectors, glazing contractors and façade installers apply the visual inspection method on delivery and at installation to verify compliance with defect acceptance criteria.
- Useful for ensuring consistent glazing quality, minimizing visible defects, and reducing disputes over acceptance of supplied laminated safety glass.
