This document specifies general requirements and definitions of liquefied natural gas fuel system components, intended for use on the types of motor vehicles as defined in ISO 3833. It also provides general design principles and specifies requirements for instructions and marking. This document is not applicable to the following: a) fuel containers; b) stationary gas engines; c) container mounting hardware; d) electronic fuel management; e) fuelling receptacles. It is recognized that miscellaneous components, not specifically covered herein can be examined to meet the criteria of this document and tested according to the appropriate functional tests. All references to pressure in this document are to be considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified. This document is based upon a working pressure for natural gas as fuel of 1,6 MPa [16 bar1]. Other working pressures can be accommodated by adjusting the pressure by the appropriate factor (ratio). For example, a 2 MPa (20 bar) working pressure system will require pressures to be multiplied by 1,25. 1 1 bar = 0,1 MPa = 105 Pa; 1 MPa = 1 N/mm2.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12614-1:2021 defines the general requirements and key definitions for components used in liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel systems for road vehicles, as classified under ISO 3833. It establishes the essential design principles, instructions, and marking requirements to ensure the safety, compatibility, and performance of LNG fuel system components. This standard is part of the ISO 12614 series, which aims to support manufacturers, suppliers, and stakeholders in the LNG vehicle sector with harmonized technical criteria.
ISO 12614-1:2021 specifically does not apply to fuel containers, stationary gas engines, container mounting hardware, electronic fuel management systems, or refuelling receptacles. However, it provides criteria for evaluating miscellaneous and multifunctional components not explicitly covered elsewhere.
Key Topics
- Component Requirements: Specifies material suitability for temperature ranges, sealing integrity, corrosion resistance, and compliance with relevant functional and safety tests.
- Working Pressure: Sets a default working pressure for natural gas fuel systems at 1.6 MPa (16 bar), with guidance on adapting requirements for systems with different pressures.
- Definitions and Terminology: Provides essential definitions, such as burst pressure, electronic control unit (ECU), manual and automatic valves, pressure regulator, and various LNG-specific gauges and sensors.
- Construction & Assembly:
- Components in contact with LNG must be suitable for cryogenic conditions.
- Joint integrity and ease of maintenance/disassembly are addressed.
- Protection against oxygen ageing and corrosion is required, especially for non-metallic and exposed parts.
- Electrical Equipment & Wiring:
- Components must prevent chafing/abrasion and withstand automotive operating conditions.
- Electrical materials and design must meet safety, fire resistance, and regulatory requirements.
- Instructions & Marking:
- Manufacturers must provide comprehensive assembly, installation, and maintenance instructions.
- Clear markings for pressure ratings, manufacturer information, certification, and traceability are mandatory.
Applications
Adhering to ISO 12614-1:2021 delivers practical value across the road vehicle LNG ecosystem:
- OEMs and Component Suppliers: Facilitate safe design, manufacturing, and testing of components such as valves, regulators, sensors, and fittings for LNG-powered vehicles.
- Fleet Operators and Maintenance Providers: Ensure clarity in maintenance and replacement procedures thanks to standardized instructions and markings.
- Regulatory Authorities: Use standardized definitions and requirements to streamline compliance assessment and vehicle certification.
- System Integrators: Apply consistent criteria for selecting, assembling, and integrating components into complete LNG fuel systems.
By aligning with ISO 12614-1:2021, the automotive industry enhances the safety, reliability, and interoperability of LNG fuel systems for trucks, buses, and specialized road vehicles, supporting the transition to cleaner alternative fuels.
Related Standards
- ISO 12614 Series: The broader family covering specific requirements for all types of LNG road vehicle components.
- ISO 3833:1977: Provides the classification and definitions for road vehicles referenced throughout ISO 12614-1.
- ISO 6722 Series: Addresses requirements for low and high-voltage automotive wiring, referenced for electrical component standards.
- ISO 15500 Series: Specifies requirements for components in compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel systems, relevant for comparative compliance.
- Other ISO/IEC Terminology Databases: Ensure up-to-date use of standardized terms and definitions.
ISO 12614-1:2021 is foundational for anyone involved in the design, production, or operation of LNG fuel systems in road vehicles, helping advance global harmonization and safety in alternative fuel mobility.
