This document specifies tests and requirements for the rigid fuel line, a liquefied natural gas fuel system component intended for use on the types of motor vehicles defined in ISO 3833. This document is not applicable to the following: a) fuel containers; b) stationary gas engines; c) container mounting hardware; d) electronic fuel management; e) refuelling receptacles. It is recognized that miscellaneous components not specifically covered herein can be examined to meet the criteria of this document and tested according to the appropriate functional tests. All references to pressure in this document are to be considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified. This document is based upon a working pressure for natural gas as a fuel of 1,6 MPa (16 bar1). Other working pressures can be accommodated by adjusting the pressure by the appropriate factor (ratio). For example, a 2 MPa (20 bar) working pressure system will require pressures to be multiplied by 1,25. 1 1 bar = 0,1 MPa = 105 Pa; 1 MPa = 1 N/mm2.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12614-10:2021 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the requirements and test methods for rigid stainless steel fuel lines used in liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel systems on road vehicles. This standard applies specifically to LNG fuel system components designed according to ISO 3833 vehicle types. It excludes components such as fuel containers, stationary gas engines, container mounting hardware, electronic fuel management, and refuelling receptacles.
The focus of ISO 12614-10:2021 is on ensuring the structural integrity, safety, and durability of rigid fuel lines operating under high-pressure conditions typical for LNG-powered vehicles. The standard is based on a working pressure of 1.6 MPa (16 bar) but allows adjustment for higher pressures, providing flexibility for various system designs.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability
ISO 12614-10 covers rigid fuel lines made of seamless cold-worked austenitic stainless steel compliant with ISO 1127 or ASTM A269. It defines tests required to verify performance under operational and safety conditions. -
Marking Requirements
Components must be clearly marked with traceability information including:- Manufacturer's name or trademark
- Model designation or part number
- Working pressure and temperature range
- Serial number or date code
Additional recommended markings include fuel type, electrical ratings, certification marks, type approval numbers, and citation of ISO 12614-10.
-
Construction and Assembly
Fuel lines must conform to design and performance criteria outlined in both ISO 12614-1 and ISO 12614-2, ensuring compatibility and reliability as part of an LNG fuel system. -
Testing Procedures
The standard mandates various tests to validate mechanical strength and functional integrity:- Hydrostatic Strength Test: Conducted at four times the working pressure to assure durability under extreme conditions.
- Leakage Testing: To confirm sealed and safe operation without fuel loss.
- Bending Test: The fuel line is bent over a mandrel (scaled by diameter) and pressurized to 4× working pressure ensuring no leaks or structural failures.
- Other general tests include corrosion resistance and vibration testing as per ISO 12614-2.
Applications
ISO 12614-10:2021 is specifically designed for manufacturers and suppliers of LNG fuel system components within the automotive industry. The rigid stainless steel fuel lines standardized by this document are essential for fueling heavy-duty vehicles, trucks, buses, and LNG-powered passenger vehicles requiring high-pressure fuel delivery systems.
By adhering to this standard, vehicle manufacturers can ensure:
- Safety compliance in LNG fuel handling against leaks and ruptures
- Performance reliability under fluctuating pressures and mechanical stress
- Traceability and certification for international market acceptance
- Compatibility with comprehensive LNG fuel system components
This standard supports the development of sustainable and efficient natural gas transportation technologies by providing a regulated baseline for fuel line quality and testing.
Related Standards
ISO 12614-10 forms part of the wider ISO 12614 series, which addresses various LNG fuel system components for road vehicles:
