This document specifies tests and requirements for the natural gas detector, a liquefied natural gas fuel system component intended for use on the types of motor vehicles defined in ISO 3833. This document is not applicable to the following: a) fuel containers; b) stationary gas engines; c) container mounting hardware; d) electronic fuel management; e) refuelling receptacles. It is recognized that miscellaneous components not specifically covered herein can be examined to meet the criteria of this document and tested according to the appropriate functional tests. All references to pressure in this document are to be considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified. This document is based upon a working pressure for natural gas as a fuel of 1,6 MPa [16 bar1]. Other working pressures can be accommodated by adjusting the pressure by the appropriate factor (ratio). For example, 2 MPa (20 bar) working pressure system will require pressures to be multiplied by 1,25. 1 1 bar = 0,1 Mpa = 105 Pa; 1 MPa = 1 N/mm2.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12614-17:2021 is an international standard established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the requirements and test methods for natural gas detectors used in liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel system components on road vehicles. It focuses exclusively on the natural gas detector as part of LNG fuel systems for motor vehicles defined under ISO 3833, excluding components like fuel containers, stationary gas engines, and refuelling receptacles.
This standard ensures the safe detection of natural gas leaks, thereby enhancing vehicle safety and environmental protection. It is based on a working pressure of natural gas at 1.6 MPa (16 bar), with provisions to adjust for different system pressures.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability
Covers natural gas detectors within LNG fuel system components for road vehicles; excludes specific parts such as electronic fuel management and container hardware. Emphasizes gauge pressure values. -
Marking Requirements
Components must be clearly marked with manufacturer information, model designation, working pressure range, serial number, and other relevant data such as fuel type and certification marks to enable traceability and proper installation. -
Construction and Assembly Guidelines
Requires compliance with general LNG fuel system standards ISO 12614-1 and ISO 12614-2. Specifies that the gas detector must link to vehicle dashboard warning systems and engine control units (ECU) for safety interventions such as fuel cut-off at predefined leak concentrations (10%, 20%, and 50% of lower explosion limit). -
Performance Testing
Mandates tests including insulation resistance (minimum 240 kΩ at 1000 V DC), minimum signalling voltage (≤8 V for 12 V systems, ≤16 V for 24 V systems), corrosion resistance, vibration resistance, and electrical overvoltages, among others. -
Safety Features
Details automatic shutdown protocols triggered by gas concentration levels, ensuring timely responses to prevent hazardous events.
Applications
ISO 12614-17:2021 is essential for manufacturers, safety engineers, and regulatory bodies involved in:
- Designing and producing natural gas detectors integrated within LNG-fueled road vehicles, including buses, trucks, and specialized machinery.
- Implementing reliable gas leak detection systems to enhance operational safety and comply with international safety regulations.
- Vehicle safety system integration, combining gas detection with electronic control systems to manage fuel delivery and prevent accidents.
- Maintenance and inspection procedures ensuring gas detectors meet performance and safety standards throughout service life.
By conforming to this standard, stakeholders can effectively minimize risks associated with LNG fuel leakage, support environmental sustainability, and promote the safe adoption of LNG-powered transportation.
