This document specifies tests and requirements for the automatic valve, a liquefied natural gas fuel system component intended for use on the types of motor vehicles defined in ISO 3833. This document is applicable to vehicles using natural gas in accordance with ISO 15403-1 (mono-fuel, bi-fuel or dual-fuel applications). It is not applicable to the following: a) fuel containers; b) stationary gas engines; c) container mounting hardware; d) electronic fuel management; e) refuelling receptacles. It is recognized that miscellaneous components not specifically covered herein can be examined to meet the criteria of this document and tested according to the appropriate functional tests. All references to pressure in this document are considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified. This document is based upon a working pressure for natural gas as a fuel of 1,6 MPa [16 bar1]. Other working pressures can be accommodated by adjusting the pressure by the appropriate factor (ratio). For example, 2 MPa (20 bar) working pressure system will require pressures to be multiplied by 1,25. 1 1 bar = 0,1 MPa = 105 Pa; 1 MPa = 1 N/mm2.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12614-19:2021 specifies the tests and requirements for automatic valves used in liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel systems for road vehicles. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this standard is part of the ISO 12614 series, which focuses on LNG fuel system components. The standard applies specifically to automatic valves used in vehicles operating on LNG and natural gas, including mono-fuel, bi-fuel, and dual-fuel motor vehicles defined by ISO 3833 and ISO 15403-1 guidelines. The automatic valve, a critical safety and operational component, must meet rigorous construction, performance, and marking criteria to ensure reliable operation under various pressure and temperature conditions.
Key Topics
Key areas addressed by ISO 12614-19:2021 include:
- Component Scope: The standard covers LNG automatic valves but excludes fuel containers, stationary engines, container mounting hardware, electronic fuel management systems, and refueling receptacles.
- Pressure Requirements: Tests are based on a default working pressure of 1.6 MPa (16 bar), with guidance for adjusting requirements for other working pressures.
- Marking and Traceability: Comprehensive marking requirements ensure clear identification of the part, including manufacturer, model, working pressure, serial number, and compliance with this standard.
- Construction and Assembly: The automatic valve must comply with general requirements and undergo specific functional tests. It must be closed when de-energized and meet additional criteria for vehicles with start-stop systems.
- Performance Testing: The standard specifies key tests, including:
- Hydrostatic strength
- Leakage under various pressures and temperatures
- Continued operation (up to 1,000,000 cycles for certain vehicle applications)
- Insulation resistance
- Minimum opening voltage to ensure proper electrical operation
Applications
ISO 12614-19:2021 is crucial for:
- Vehicle Manufacturers: Ensuring automatic valves in LNG fuel systems for road vehicles meet international safety and performance benchmarks.
- Component Suppliers: Demonstrating compliance with global market requirements through standardized testing and marking.
- Certification Bodies: Verifying that automatic valves adhere to robust test regimes for pressure, leakage, operational cycles, and electrical insulation.
- Gas Vehicle Converters: Selecting components for mono-fuel, bi-fuel, or dual-fuel conversion in compliance with ISO specifications.
The standard also recognizes the assessment of miscellaneous components not explicitly covered but intended for similar functional use, encouraging flexibility while maintaining safety and performance.
Related Standards
For comprehensive LNG fuel system compliance, consider these related international standards:
- ISO 12614-1: General requirements and definitions for LNG fuel system components
- ISO 12614-2: Performance and general test methods
- ISO 15403-1: Quality designation of natural gas for use as a vehicle fuel
- ISO 3833: Definitions for various types of road vehicles
Organizations adhering to ISO 12614-19:2021 support vehicle safety, performance, and international market access for LNG-fueled and natural gas-powered vehicles. For best results, integrate this standard with the complete ISO 12614 series and other relevant vehicle and gas system standards.
