This document specifies tests and requirements for the flexible fuel lines, a liquefied natural gas fuel system component intended for use on the types of motor vehicles defined in ISO 3833. This document is not applicable to the following: a) fuel containers; b) stationary gas engines; c) container mounting hardware; d) electronic fuel management; e) refuelling receptacles. NOTE 1 It is recognized that miscellaneous components not specifically covered herein can be examined to meet the criteria of this document and tested according to the appropriate functional tests. NOTE 2 All references to pressure in this document are considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified. NOTE 3 This document is based upon a working pressure for natural gas as a fuel of 1,6 MPa (16 bar). (1 bar = 0,1 MPa = 105 Pa; 1 MPa = 1 N/mm2.) Other working pressures can be accommodated by adjusting the pressure by the appropriate factor (ratio). For example, a 2 MPa (20 bar) working pressure system will require pressures to be multiplied by 1,25.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12614-20:2023 is an international standard developed by ISO that specifies the tests and requirements for flexible fuel or vent lines used in liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel systems for road vehicles. As part of the ISO 12614 series, this document is applicable to flexible lines that form crucial connections within LNG fuel systems. The standard defines the construction, assembly, performance, and testing protocols essential to ensuring the safety, reliability, and durability of these components in the demanding operating environments typical of LNG vehicles. ISO 12614-20:2023 plays a fundamental role in supporting the adoption of LNG as an alternative fuel in the transport sector by setting high benchmarks for critical system components.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability
- Applies to flexible fuel or vent lines for LNG fuel systems in motor vehicles as defined by ISO 3833
- Excludes fuel containers, stationary gas engines, container mounting hardware, electronic fuel management, and refuelling receptacles
-
Construction and Materials
- Specifies materials such as austenitic stainless steel or nickel alloys for corrosion resistance and compatibility with LNG
- Outlines construction requirements for hose assemblies, braids, end fittings, and protective sheaths
- Mandates single continuous hose construction without circumferential welds
-
Marking and Traceability
- Requires clear component markings including manufacturer details, working pressure, temperature range, and serial numbers
- Additional recommended markings for installation direction, fuel type, and certifications
-
Assembly and Installation
- Guidance on assembly practices to ensure leak-tight connections, appropriate welding, and minimization of corrosion
- Emphasizes correct installation procedures, proper handling to avoid kinking or twisting, and inspection for damage or defects
-
Testing Protocols
- Test methods for hydrostatic strength, pressure cycling (continued operation), vibration resistance, and bending
- Specifies pressure ratings-default working pressure is 1.6 MPa (16 bar), with other pressures allowed by adjustment
- Requires material and hose assembly testing according to referenced ISO and ASME standards
Applications
ISO 12614-20:2023 is directly relevant for manufacturers and suppliers involved in designing, producing, and certifying flexible fuel lines for LNG-powered vehicles. Its use ensures that:
- Safety: Flexible LNG fuel or vent lines are robust under operational stresses, minimizing risk of leaks and failures.
- Compliance: Components meet key international requirements, simplifying vehicle approval processes in global markets.
- Reliability: Quality assurance is maintained from the selection of raw materials through to final assembly and field installation.
- Maintenance: Procedures for inspection, marking, and installation aid fleet operators and technicians in ensuring longevity and serviceability of LNG system components.
This standard is vital in the context of heavy-duty trucks, buses, and other commercial vehicles transitioning to LNG to achieve lower emissions and operational costs.
Related Standards
For comprehensive compliance and system integrity, ISO 12614-20:2023 should be implemented alongside related documents, including:
- ISO 12614-1: General requirements and definitions for LNG fuel system components
- ISO 12614-2: Performance and general test methods for LNG components
- ISO 12614-11: Specific requirements for fittings used in LNG fuel systems
- ISO 23208: Cleanliness for cryogenic service in cryogenic vessels
- ANSI/ASME B31.3: Process piping (regulates fabrication, assembly, and inspection procedures)
- ISO 3833: Road vehicles - Terms and definitions for vehicle types
These standards together establish a robust framework for safe and reliable deployment of LNG fuel systems in automotive applications, ensuring adoption of best practices throughout the supply chain.
By adhering to ISO 12614-20:2023, organizations support the growth of LNG as a clean transportation fuel while fostering high levels of component performance, safety, and regulatory compliance.
