This document specifies tests and requirements for the check valve, a liquefied natural gas fuel system component intended for use on the types of motor vehicles defined in ISO 3833. This document is not applicable to the following: a) fuel containers; b) stationary gas engines; c) container mounting hardware; d) electronic fuel management; e) refuelling receptacles. It is recognized that miscellaneous components not specifically covered herein can be examined to meet the criteria of this document and tested according to the appropriate functional tests. All references to pressure in this document are to be considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified. This document is based upon a working pressure for natural gas as a fuel of 1,6 MPa [16 bar1]. Other working pressures can be accommodated by adjusting the pressure by the appropriate factor (ratio). For example, 2 MPa (20 bar) working pressure system will require pressures to be multiplied by 1,25. 1 1 bar = 0,1 MPa = 105 Pa; 1 MPa = 1 N/mm2.

ISO 12614-3:2021 - Road vehicles - Liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel system components - Part 3: Check valve specifies tests and requirements for check valves used in LNG fuel systems for road vehicles (as defined in ISO 3833). The standard defines marking, construction/assembly expectations and the specific functional tests (hydrostatic strength, leakage, continued operation) required to verify safe, reliable check valve performance for LNG applications. All pressures are gauge pressures and the document is based on a nominal working pressure (WP) of 1.6 MPa (16 bar); other WPs are accommodated by applying a ratio (for example, 2.0 MPa requires a 1.25 multiplier).

- Leakage tests are specified at multiple temperatures and pressure factors (see standard Table 2): e.g., at <−162 °C use 1.0 × WP and 0.25 × WP; at 20 °C use 0.25 × WP and 1.5 × WP; at 85 or 120 °C use 0.25 × WP.
- Continued operation
- Check valves must withstand 7,000 cycles under a specified pressure cycling procedure (inlet at 1.25 × WP, venting to 0–0.5 × test pressure between cycles). Valve must function and pass the hydrostatic test afterwards.
