This document specifies tests and requirements for the gas-tight housing and ventilation hose, a liquefied natural gas fuel system component intended for use on the types of motor vehicles defined in ISO 3833. This document is applicable to vehicles using natural gas in accordance with ISO 15403-1 (mono-fuel, bi-fuel, or dual-fuel applications). It is not applicable to the following: a) fuel containers; b) stationary gas engines; c) container mounting hardware; d) electronic fuel management; e) refuelling receptacles. It is recognized that miscellaneous components not specifically covered herein can be examined to meet the criteria of this document and tested according to the appropriate functional tests. All references to pressure in this document are to be considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified. This document is based upon a working pressure for natural gas as a fuel of 1,6 MPa [16 bar1]. Other working pressures can be accommodated by adjusting the pressure by the appropriate factor (ratio). For example, 2 MPa (20 bar) working pressure system will require pressures to be multiplied by 1,25. 1 1 bar = 0,1 MPa = 105 Pa; 1 MPa = 1 N/mm2.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12614-9:2021 specifies tests and requirements for the gas-tight housing and ventilation hose used in liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel systems for road vehicles (types defined in ISO 3833). It applies to mono-fuel, bi-fuel and dual-fuel applications using natural gas per ISO 15403-1, and excludes fuel containers, stationary gas engines, container mounting hardware, electronic fuel management and refuelling receptacles.
This part of ISO 12614 focuses on functional safety and component integrity by defining marking, construction considerations and specific test methods for leakage and mechanical retention.
Key Topics
-
Scope & applicability
- Applies to LNG fuel system components for vehicles as defined in ISO 3833.
- Covers components intended for natural gas quality per ISO 15403-1.
- Lists explicit exclusions (fuel containers, stationary engines, etc.).
-
Marking requirements
- Components shall be marked to allow traceability: manufacturer, model/part number, temperature range, serial number or date code.
- Recommended markings: flow direction, fuel type, electrical ratings (if applicable), certification symbol, type approval number and reference to ISO 12614-9.
-
Construction and assembly
- Gas-tight housing must be assembled so pressure relief devices (PRDs) are not impaired.
- Components should meet the general provisions of ISO 12614-1 and ISO 12614-2.
-
Tests and acceptance criteria
- Leakage testing follows ISO 12614-2 procedures at defined temperatures and pressures.
- Specified test temperatures and gauge pressures include: < −160 °C at 0.05 MPa (0.5 bar), 20 °C at 0.05 MPa and 85 °C at 0.05 MPa.
- Pull-off test: ventilation hose assembly is subjected to a static tensile load (max 100 N/min); minimum acceptable pull-off force is 100 N.
- The document is based on a working pressure of 1.6 MPa (16 bar); other working pressures can be accommodated by applying an appropriate ratio (e.g., 2.0 MPa requires multiplication by 1.25).
Applications
- Provides manufacturers and test laboratories with criteria for validating LNG gas-tight housings and ventilation hoses used on road vehicles.
- Supports type-approval, quality control and component selection for OEMs, suppliers and certification bodies.
- Helps ensure safe venting, reduced leakage risk and reliable mechanical retention under expected service conditions.
