ISO 12619-1:2014 specifies general requirements and definitions of compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2) and hydrogen/natural gas blends fuel system components, intended for use on the types of motor vehicles defined in ISO 3833. It also provides general design principles and specifies requirements for instructions and markings. ISO 12619-1:2014 is applicable to vehicles using CGH2 in accordance with ISO 14687-1 or ISO 14687-2 and hydrogen/natural gas blends using natural gas in accordance with ISO 15403-1 and ISO/TR 15403-2. It is not applicable to the following: -liquefied hydrogen (LH2) fuel system components; -fuel containers; -stationary gas engines; -container mounting hardware; -electronic fuel management; -refuelling receptacles.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12619-1:2014 - "Road vehicles - Compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2) and hydrogen/natural gas blends fuel system components - Part 1: General requirements and definitions" sets out the general requirements, definitions and basic design principles for fuel system components used with compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2) and hydrogen/natural gas blends on road vehicles (as defined in ISO 3833). The document covers material compatibility, construction and assembly, basic electrical wiring requirements, instructions and markings, and core terminology needed to develop and test CGH2 and hydrogen-blend components.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Applies to components for vehicles using CGH2 (per ISO 14687 series) and hydrogen/natural gas blends (natural gas per ISO 15403 series).
- Exclusions: liquefied hydrogen (LH2) components, fuel containers, stationary gas engines, container mounting hardware, electronic fuel management, and refuelling receptacles.
- Definitions
- Standardizes terms such as valve types (manual, automatic, check, excess flow), PRV/PRD, gas injector, rigid and flexible fuel lines, and hydrogen blend (>2% H2 by volume but not pure hydrogen).
- Materials and compatibility
- Materials in contact with hydrogen must be verified for hydrogen embrittlement, accelerated fatigue and corrosion resistance.
- Non-metallic materials (seals, diaphragms) must meet the immersion and oxygen-ageing tests specified in ISO 12619‑2.
- Construction and assembly
- Gas-tight sealing for joints; recommendation to replace tapered thread fittings when disassembled.
- Fuel flow shut-off devices to be normally closed.
- Components must tolerate specified temperature ranges (e.g., locations inside engine compartment and external locations).
- Gas-tight housing venting requirement (clear opening at least 450 mm²).
- Electrical
- Wiring and electrical equipment to be automotive quality per ISO 6722; openings must prevent chafing.
- Safety devices
- Definitions and requirements for pressure relief valves (PRV), pressure relief devices (PRD) and pressure regulators.
Applications
- Design and development of CGH2 and hydrogen/natural gas blend fuel system components (valves, regulators, lines, injectors).
- Manufacturer specifications, component selection, and assembly guidelines for OEMs and tier suppliers.
- Basis for performance testing (used in conjunction with Part 2) and conformity checks by testing laboratories and certification bodies.
- Reference for safety engineers integrating hydrogen fuel systems into road vehicles and for fleet operators assessing component compliance.
Who should use this standard
- Automotive OEMs and component manufacturers
- Test laboratories and certification bodies
- Design and safety engineers working on hydrogen-powered vehicles
- Regulators and policy groups developing vehicle safety requirements
