ISO 12619-13:2017 specifies tests and requirements for the rigid fuel line in stainless steel, a compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2) and hydrogen/natural gas blend fuel system component intended for use on the types of motor vehicles defined in ISO 3833. It is applicable to vehicles using CGH2 in accordance with ISO 14687-1 or ISO 14687-2 and hydrogen/natural gas blend using natural gas in accordance with ISO 15403-1 and ISO/TR 15403-2. It is not applicable to the following: a) liquefied hydrogen (LH2) fuel system components; b) fuel containers; c) stationary gas engines; d) container mounting hardware; e) electronic fuel management; f) refuelling receptacles; g) fuel cell vehicles. NOTE 1 It is recognized that miscellaneous components not specifically covered herein can be examined to meet the criteria of ISO 12619-13:2017 and tested according to the appropriate functional tests. NOTE 2 All references to pressure in ISO 12619-13:2017 are considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12619-13:2017 specifies tests and requirements for rigid fuel lines in stainless steel used in road-vehicle fuel systems carrying compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2) and hydrogen/natural gas blends. The standard applies to vehicles as defined in ISO 3833 and to fuels meeting ISO 14687 (hydrogen) and ISO 15403 (natural gas) product specifications. It does not apply to liquefied hydrogen (LH2) components, fuel containers, fuel cell vehicles, refuelling receptacles, electronic fuel management or certain mounting hardware. All pressure references are gauge pressures unless stated otherwise.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Material & construction
- Rigid fuel line must be seamless, cold-worked austenitic stainless steel tube in compliance with ISO 1127.
- Construction and tolerances follow ISO 12619-1 and ISO 12619-2 where applicable.
- Marking & traceability
- Mandatory markings: manufacturer/agent identification, model/part number and temperature range.
- Recommended: flow direction, fuel type, electrical ratings, certification symbol, type approval number, serial/date code, and reference to ISO 12619-13:2017.
- Required tests
- Hydrostatic strength: test at four times the working pressure (higher than other series parts to allow margin for damage/abrasion).
- Continued operation: cyclic endurance testing for 100 000 cycles followed by hydrostatic retest.
- Bending: bend over a mandrel (per ISO 12619-2) into a U-shape, close ends, perform hydrostatic test, then leakage test.
- Other referenced test procedures (e.g., leakage, corrosion, ageing, automotive fluids) are defined in ISO 12619-2; applicability is shown in the standard’s test table.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 12619-13:2017 is intended for:
- OEMs and tier‑1/2 component manufacturers designing and producing rigid stainless-steel fuel lines for CGH2 and hydrogen/natural gas blend vehicles.
- Design and validation engineers specifying material, assembly, and test methods for hydrogen fuel systems.
- Test laboratories performing hydrostatic, cyclic, bending and leakage evaluations to support type approval and quality control.
- Regulatory and certification bodies assessing compliance for on‑vehicle gaseous hydrogen fuel system components. Practical uses include component design validation, production quality assurance, supplier specifications, and type‑approval documentation.
