ISO 12619-14:2017 specifies tests and requirements for the flexible fuel line, a compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2) and hydrogen/natural gas blend fuel system component intended for use on the types of motor vehicles defined in ISO 3833. It is applicable to vehicles using CGH2 in accordance with ISO 14687-1 or ISO 14687-2 and hydrogen/natural gas blend using natural gas in accordance with ISO 15403-1 and ISO/TR 15403-2. It is not applicable to the following: a) liquefied hydrogen (LH2) fuel system components; b) fuel containers; c) stationary gas engines; d) container mounting hardware; e) electronic fuel management; f) refuelling receptacles; g) fuel cell vehicles. NOTE 1 It is recognized that miscellaneous components not specifically covered herein can be examined to meet the criteria of ISO 12619-14:2017 and tested according to the appropriate functional tests. NOTE 2 All references to pressure in ISO 12619-14:2017 are considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12619-14:2017 defines tests and performance requirements for the flexible fuel line used in road vehicles fueled with compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2) and hydrogen/natural gas blends. It is part of the ISO 12619 series addressing fuel system components for gaseous hydrogen applications and applies to vehicles defined in ISO 3833 using hydrogen in accordance with ISO 14687 and natural gas per ISO 15403. The standard excludes LH2 components, fuel containers, refuelling receptacles, fuel cell vehicles and other items listed in the scope.
Key topics and technical requirements
ISO 12619-14:2017 focuses on construction, marking and a suite of functional tests to verify safety and durability of flexible fuel lines. Major technical topics include:
- Marking and traceability: manufacturer identification, part number, temperature range and recommended additional markings (flow direction, fuel type, serial/date code, reference to ISO 12619-14:2017).
- Construction and assembly: compliance with ISO 12619-1 and ISO 12619-2; tolerances per ISO 12619-2.
- Hydrostatic strength: hydrostatic test at four times the specified working pressure (see standard).
- Continued operation (fatigue): cycling tests - 20 000 cycles for high-pressure flexible lines and 100 000 cycles for low-pressure lines, followed by leak and hydrostatic testing.
- Bending: no kinking under specified bend radius; a steel-ball pass test confirms internal integrity.
- Pull-off strength: tensile separation force calculated per formula in the standard (dependent on inside diameter and working pressure).
- Electrical conductivity: resistance between couplings < 1 MΩ/m to dissipate static electricity.
- Permeability: filled line monitored in a sealed chamber for 14 days; hourly permeation rate requirement per the document (see ISO 12619-14:2017 for exact value and units) and internal inspection for cracking or degradation.
Applications and who uses this standard
ISO 12619-14:2017 is directly relevant for:
- Flexible fuel line manufacturers and material suppliers developing hydrogen-capable hoses and assemblies.
- Automotive OEMs and integrators specifying components for hydrogen or HCNG (hydrogen‑natural gas blend) vehicles.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies performing conformity, durability and safety testing.
- Regulatory authorities and vehicle component approval schemes that reference standardized test methods.
Implementing ISO 12619-14 helps ensure safe, durable and traceable flexible fuel lines for hydrogen and blend-fueled vehicles, reducing leak, permeation and static-related risks.
