ISO 12619-16:2017 specifies tests and requirements for the fittings, compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2) and hydrogen/natural gas blend fuel system components intended for use on the types of motor vehicles defined in ISO 3833. It is applicable to vehicles using CGH2 in accordance with ISO 14687-1 or ISO 14687-2 and hydrogen/natural gas blend using natural gas in accordance with ISO 15403-1 and ISO/TR 15403-2. It is not applicable to the following: a) liquefied hydrogen (LH2) fuel system components; b) fuel containers; c) stationary gas engines; d) container mounting hardware; e) electronic fuel management; f) refuelling receptacles; g) fuel cell vehicles. NOTE 1 It is recognized that miscellaneous components not specifically covered herein can be examined to meet the criteria of ISO 12619-16:2017 and tested according to the appropriate functional tests. NOTE 2 All references to pressure in ISO 12619-16:2017 are considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12619-16:2017 is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the requirements and tests for fittings used in fuel system components of road vehicles powered by compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2) and hydrogen/natural gas blends. This standard ensures the safety, reliability, and compatibility of fittings in these advanced fuel systems.
The scope of ISO 12619-16:2017 covers fittings intended for motor vehicles as defined by ISO 3833, utilizing CGH2 fuels compliant with ISO 14687-1 or ISO 14687-2 and hydrogen/natural gas blends compliant with ISO 15403-1 and ISO/TR 15403-2. It excludes components such as liquefied hydrogen fuel systems, fuel containers, stationary engines, mounting hardware, electronic fuel management, refuelling receptacles, and fuel cell vehicles.
This standard plays a critical role in enabling safe and effective use of hydrogen and hydrogen blends in road transportation, directly supporting the transition to cleaner and more sustainable vehicle fuel technologies.
Key Topics
-
Fitting Construction
ISO 12619-16 sets detailed requirements for the construction and assembly of fittings, including compatibility with rigid fuel lines and prevention of galvanic corrosion. Stainless steel fittings are mandated for stainless steel fuel lines to maintain material consistency. -
Marking Requirements
Essential markings must be present on the fittings to enable traceability, including manufacturer identification, model designation, temperature range, type of fuel, flow direction, certification symbols, and reference to ISO 12619-16:2017. -
Testing Procedures
The standard prescribes rigorous testing to ensure component durability and safety under operational conditions:- Hydrostatic Strength Test: Fittings must withstand pressures four times the working pressure.
- Continued Operation Test: 100,000 cycles of operation are simulated to verify ongoing performance.
- Vibration Resistance Test: Fittings are subjected to vibrations across multiple axes and frequencies to mimic road conditions.
- Pull-off Test: Ensures fittings maintain secure mechanical attachment under tensile loads exceeding calculated limits.
- Repeated Assembly Test: Validates that fittings endure being assembled and disassembled 25 times without leakage.
-
Pressure Reference
All pressures mentioned in the document are considered gauge pressures unless specified otherwise.
Applications
ISO 12619-16:2017 is integral to the design, manufacture, and certification of fittings used in hydrogen fuel systems for road vehicles, including:
- Compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2) fueled vehicles.
- Vehicles using blends of hydrogen and natural gas as fuel.
Its applications include:
- Ensuring safe hydrogen fuel delivery through robust, leak-proof fittings.
- Supporting manufacturers in meeting regulatory and safety benchmarks.
- Facilitating the adoption of low-emission hydrogen fuel technologies, contributing to environmental sustainability.
- Guiding quality control and testing processes for fuel system components in automotive manufacturing.
By following this standard, automotive and component manufacturers can improve the safety and reliability of hydrogen fuel systems and accelerate the deployment of hydrogen-powered vehicles on public roads.
Related Standards
ISO 12619-16:2017 complements other standards in the ISO 12619 series and related hydrogen and natural gas fuel system regulations, including:
- ISO 12619-1 & ISO 12619-2: General requirements and test methods for CGH2 and hydrogen/natural gas blend fuel system components.
- ISO 14687-1 / ISO 14687-2: Specifications for hydrogen fuel quality for general applications and fuel cells.
- ISO 15403-1 / ISO/TR 15403-2: Specifications for natural gas quality when blended with hydrogen.
- ISO 3833: Defines vehicle types relevant to fuel system components.
- ISO/TS 15869: Requirements for gaseous hydrogen land vehicle fuel tanks.
- ISO/TR 15916: Safety considerations for hydrogen systems.
By aligning with these standards, industry stakeholders ensure comprehensive compliance and interoperability across hydrogen and blended gaseous fuel systems.
