ISO 12619-3:2014 specifies tests and requirements for the pressure regulator, a compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2) and hydrogen/natural gas blends fuel system component intended for use on the types of motor vehicles defined in ISO 3833. ISO 12619-3:2014 is applicable to vehicles using CGH2 in accordance with ISO 14687‑1 or ISO 14687‑2 and hydrogen/natural gas blends using natural gas in accordance with ISO 15403‑1 and ISO/TR 15403‑2. It is not applicable to the following: -liquefied hydrogen (LH2) fuel system components; -fuel containers; -stationary gas engines; -container mounting hardware; -electronic fuel management; -refuelling receptacles.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12619-3:2014 - "Road vehicles - Compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2) and hydrogen/natural gas blends fuel system components - Part 3: Pressure regulator" specifies tests, marking and performance requirements for pressure regulators used in vehicle fuel systems that run on compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2) or hydrogen/natural gas blends. The standard targets on‑vehicle pressure regulator components (vehicles as defined in ISO 3833) and supports safe, traceable design, manufacture and verification of regulators used with hydrogen fuels (per ISO 14687 and ISO 15403 series). It explicitly excludes liquefied hydrogen (LH2) components, fuel containers, stationary engines, refuelling receptacles and some electronic fuel management items.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & applicability: Applies to CGH2 and hydrogen/natural gas blends for road vehicles; references ISO 12619-1 and ISO 12619-2 for general requirements and test methods.
- Marking & traceability: Regulators must be marked with manufacturer, model/part number, working pressure (and range), maximum outlet pressure, fuel type and recommended additional identifiers (flow direction, electrical ratings, serial/date code, standard reference).
- Construction qualifications: Non‑metallic parts in contact with hydrogen must comply with ISO 11114-2; pressure relief valves must be resettable and may be integral or separate.
- Performance & tests (selected, practical highlights):
- Hydrostatic strength - pressure chambers and outlets tested (typically 1.5× working pressure or minimum test pressures).
- External leakage - leak tests at prescribed temperatures and pressure stages (including -40/‑20 °C, +20 °C, and high temperature).
- Continued operation (durability) - cycling endurance (50 000 cycles) with staged temperature and pressure profiles; lock‑up pressure limits enforced.
- Insulation resistance - 1 000 V d.c. applied between coil pin and housing; minimum 240 kΩ.
- Pressure impulse - internal and external impulse resistance (including 100 inlet pressure pulses) without permanent deformation or excessive lock‑up.
- Water jacket freezing - freeze/thaw conditioning for regulators with coolant jackets and subsequent leakage verification.
Practical applications and who uses this standard
- Pressure regulator manufacturers - design validation, material selection, marking and factory settings.
- Automotive OEMs and integrators - component selection and system compatibility for hydrogen vehicles.
- Test laboratories & certification bodies - type approval, safety verification and conformity testing.
- Suppliers and maintenance providers - installation guidance, inspection and periodic testing criteria. Using ISO 12619-3:2014 helps ensure regulator safety, reliability and regulatory compliance in hydrogen fuel systems - critical for vehicle safety, leak control and durable performance.
