ISO 12619-8:2017 specifies tests and requirements for the pressure indicator, a compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2) and hydrogen/natural gas blend fuel system component intended for use on the types of motor vehicles defined in ISO 3833. It is applicable to vehicles using CGH2 in accordance with ISO 14687-1 or ISO 14687-2 and hydrogen/natural gas blend using natural gas in accordance with ISO 15403-1 and ISO/TR 15403-2. It is not applicable to the following: a) liquefied hydrogen (LH2) fuel system components; b) fuel containers; c) stationary gas engines; d) container mounting hardware; e) electronic fuel management; f) refuelling receptacles; g) fuel cell vehicles. NOTE 1 It is recognized that miscellaneous components not specifically covered herein can be examined to meet the criteria of ISO 12619-8:2017 and tested according to the appropriate functional tests. NOTE 2 All references to pressure in ISO 12619-8:2017 are considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12619-8:2017 - Road vehicles - Compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2) and hydrogen/natural gas blends fuel system components - Part 8: Pressure indicator specifies tests and performance requirements for pressure indicators used on road vehicles (per ISO 3833) that run on CGH2 or hydrogen/natural gas blends. The standard defines marking, construction, and functional tests to ensure safety, reliability and traceability of pressure gauges and transducers in hydrogen fuel systems. It excludes LH2 components, fuel containers, fuel cell vehicles and other listed items.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & applicability: Applies to pressure indicators for vehicles using CGH2 (ISO 14687 series) and hydrogen/natural gas blends (ISO 15403 series). Not applicable to liquefied hydrogen (LH2), fuel containers, refuelling receptacles, fuel cell vehicles, etc.
- Marking (traceability): Manufacturer/agent name or symbol, model/part number, working pressure or pressure‑temperature range. Recommended markings include flow direction, fuel type, electrical ratings, certification symbol, type‑approval number, serial/date code and a reference to ISO 12619-8:2017.
- Construction: Pressure transducers/gauges must meet ISO 12619-1 and ISO 12619-2 provisions. Indicators shall display at least 1.5× the service (working) pressure. Gauges require a shatter‑proof lens and an external pressure relief that is not directed to the front.
- Testing requirements:
- Hydrostatic strength: tested per ISO 12619-2 at 2.5× working pressure.
- Leakage: evaluated at defined cold, ambient and high temperatures with specified fractions of working pressure (see Table 2 of the standard).
- Continued operation: 20,000 cycles (pressurize to WP then depressurize to <0.5× WP), followed by leakage re-test.
- Electrical tests (if applicable):
- Insulation resistance: 1 000 V DC between connector pin and housing for ≥2 s; minimum resistance 240 kΩ.
- Minimum operating voltage: ≤ 8 V for 12 V systems and ≤ 16 V for 24 V systems; component pressurized at 0.75× WP during the test.
Applications and users
Who benefits from ISO 12619-8:2017:
- Pressure indicator and sensor manufacturers (design and type approval)
- Automotive OEMs integrating hydrogen fuel systems
