ISO 12619-9:2017 specifies tests and requirements for the pressure relief valve (PRV), a compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2) and hydrogen/natural gas blend fuel system component intended for use on the types of motor vehicles defined in ISO 3833. It is applicable to vehicles using CGH2 in accordance with ISO 14687-1 or ISO 14687-2 and hydrogen/natural gas blend using natural gas in accordance with ISO 15403-1 and ISO/TR 15403-2. It is not applicable to the following: a) liquefied hydrogen (LH2) fuel system components; b) fuel containers; c) stationary gas engines; d) container mounting hardware; e) electronic fuel management; f) refuelling receptacles; g) fuel cell vehicles. NOTE 1 It is recognized that miscellaneous components not specifically covered herein can be examined to meet the criteria of ISO 12619-9:2017 and tested according to the appropriate functional tests. NOTE 2 All references to pressure in ISO 12619-9:2017 are considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12619-9:2017 is an international standard developed by ISO that specifies the requirements and testing procedures for pressure relief valves (PRVs) used in fuel systems of road vehicles running on compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2) or hydrogen/natural gas blends. These PRVs are critical safety components designed to protect fuel systems operating at high pressures by preventing overpressure situations. This standard applies to vehicles defined under ISO 3833 and fuels conforming to ISO 14687 and ISO 15403 series standards. It excludes components like liquefied hydrogen systems, fuel containers, fuel cell vehicles, and certain hardware elements.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability
ISO 12619-9:2017 focuses specifically on PRVs for CGH2 and hydrogen/natural gas blends used in motor vehicles. It covers design, testing, and marking but excludes liquefied hydrogen fuel components and certain ancillary parts. -
Testing and Requirements
The standard mandates rigorous testing to ensure PRV reliability and safety under various operational conditions:- Hydrostatic strength test at a minimum of 2.5 times the working pressure.
- Leakage tests at temperatures ranging from –40 °C up to 120 °C to simulate different environments.
- Continued operation testing with 600 cycle operations to verify durability.
- Operational tests verifying opening and re-seating pressures within defined accuracy ranges.
-
Marking and Traceability
PRVs must be clearly marked to enable traceability and safe installation. Required markings include manufacturer identification, model number, working pressure and temperature range, fuel type, flow direction if critical, and reference to ISO 12619-9:2017. -
Construction and Compatibility
PRVs should comply with the construction provisions in related ISO standards (ISO 12619-1 and ISO 12619-2), ensuring components do not interfere with valve performance. The standard also highlights the need for compatibility with hydrogen and natural gas blends.
Applications
ISO 12619-9:2017 serves as a vital reference for:
- Automotive manufacturers designing fuel systems for hydrogen-powered vehicles.
- Component manufacturers producing pressure relief valves for safe operation in CGH2 and hydrogen/natural gas hydrogen blend fuel systems.
- Safety and compliance engineers ensuring that PRVs meet international safety and performance standards under extreme temperature and pressure conditions.
- Certification bodies validating the conformity of PRVs with international requirements before vehicle integration.
- Researchers and developers working on hydrogen fuel technologies who require standardized test methods and performance criteria for safety components.
This standard supports the broader adoption of hydrogen and hydrogen blend fuels in road transport by establishing trusted safety benchmarks.
