This document provides safety requirements specific to binding and finishing equipment and systems. It provides additional safety requirements for the design and construction of new equipment used to convert printed or blank substrates into cut, folded, collated, assembled, bound, or otherwise finished product. This document is applicable to processes for preparing substrate for the printing process. It is also applicable to a wide range of equipment used in the binding and finishing process.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 12643-3:2023 - Graphic technology - Safety requirements for graphic technology equipment and systems - Part 3: Binding and finishing equipment and systems is a Type‑C safety standard that specifies additional machine safety requirements specific to binding and finishing machinery. It applies to new equipment used to convert printed or blank substrates into cut, folded, collated, assembled, bound or otherwise finished products and to processes that prepare substrate for printing. The standard complements general machinery safety principles and is intended for designers, manufacturers, integrators and safety assessors in the graphic technology and printing industries.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and definitions: Terms and boundaries for binding and finishing equipment covered by the standard.
- Significant hazards: Identification and classification of hazards typical to binding and finishing processes (listed in Annex B).
- Guarding and interlocks: Detailed requirements for guards, interlocking devices and guard locking, including exceptions for inching and production speeds.
- Hoppers and feeders: Safety measures for manually loaded and automatically fed hoppers, residual pile monitoring and protection of unused feeders.
- Machine-specific safeguards: Requirements tailored to common equipment types - gathering machines, perfect binders (including gluing temperature control and milling head safeguarding), gang stitchers, book production lines, folding machines, laminators, coaters, embossers, paper drills, and more.
- Cutting and trimming: Special rules for guillotine cutters, three‑knife trimmers and knife/clamp safety, including provisions for retraction and safe operator access.
- Verification and documentation: Verification table for safety measures (Clause 6) and required content for instruction handbooks and user information (Clause 7).
- Annexes: Normative Annex A contains formulae for safety distance calculations for ESPDs on guillotine cutters and three‑knife trimmers; Annex B lists significant hazards.
Practical applications
- Use ISO 12643-3:2023 to design and build safer binding and finishing equipment, integrate protective systems, and validate safety-related control systems (e.g., temperature monitoring in gluing units).
- Apply the standard during risk assessments, CE conformity work, factory acceptance testing and commissioning of bookbinding lines, trimmers, guillotines and finishing machines.
- Prepare operator manuals, maintenance procedures and training materials aligned with the document’s instruction handbook requirements.
Who should use it
- Machine manufacturers and OEMs producing binding and finishing equipment
- Printing and post-press engineers, production managers and maintenance teams
- Safety officers, conformity assessors, and regulatory bodies overseeing machine safety
- System integrators and buyers specifying safe machinery for print finishing
